There are some link / image issues in the article. The sign for X and Y are identical, and the link to all images in the article point to the Top.jpg image from the CF-18 review. |

Can't shoot the messenger this time... It looks the way it's supposed to look in the one I submitted. I'll take the blame for Viola and Voila! but the pictures were okay when I sent it. |

Thanks. It's better, but sorry to be a thorn. The firs time the images appear should be swapped. The crossed fingers (X) should appear before the curved (R) finger.
Thanks for reading it Hummer. |

Fun read. I must admit that the Swedish SL is a tad more logical:
At least when it comes to X and R...

I had to eventually respond to this. Today I am getting my lessons ready to teach a new quarter of Sign. I was thinking of printing this out for a chuckle for the class -
ASL is based on French Sign language~ maybe the X and R make more sense there.
http://www.omniglot.com/links/signlanguage.htm
you do it. I'm lazy.
I always learned the "x" marked the X HEIGHT - which is why it's hooked over. We've long since lost the idea of X heiiight since we have long since not had to DRAW our alphabets for print.
Also - the fingerspelling alphabet isn't *technically* part of ASL :
: it is used to (obviously) express WRITTEN ENGLISH when signs can't be used (Proper names usually). What a whammie.
So - it is my egomaniacal opinion that Q should be spanked for causing yet MORE controversy in Deaf America... as if the Gallaudet President issue isn't enough.
SHAME!
By the way Q -
my response to the article...

IMO, the representation of the R and X are appropriate as they are currently used.
Think of using the letters in their lowercase format. In this instance you should see that the lower case r matches up with the sign for it. The pointer finger being the straight part of the r and the middle finger being the 1/4 arch from left to right. When you view this in the mirror it will look exactly like an r.
The sign for the x has more of an arch to it, representing the 1/4 arch that would be used when starting a lower case x. Unfortunately, the other part of the x is left off since there is no way to complete the x unless you used to hands.
If you want to pick on some letters, use g and q. It took me years to finally learn the difference of those two.
And as O2 pointed out, ASL is more of signs that represent words...not the alphabet or spelling out of words themselves. |
