Wed Nov 08, 2006 10:45 am Post subject: x64 based Linux distros, recommendations? |
|
Hey all
With some issues arising with BSd, I've got to look for some Linux distros to run the software that I need (mainly VMWare). Since i have a 64 bit processor in the machine that I'm using I'm looking for recommendations for a x64 bit distro to utilize it. Any suggestions? |

I don't have any 64bit machines - well actually I do, but for some reason it has a 32bit distro on it... I reckon SUSE would probably be your best bet - anyone out there with a 64bit SUSE install? |

I used to have a 64bit SUSE installed. I switched back to 32bit because of media codecs. That and flash. It seemed like too much of a mish-mash of 64 and 32bit software getting the multimedia to work properly. I would imagine if you didn't need that stuff it would work quite well. It was a very nice distro just didn't have all the shiny things I wanted. |

After installing the Mandriva free 2k7 I can say I'm impressed. Its even better than the 2k6 version. comes with KDE 3.5.2
and you can D/L the 32/64 OS or the strict 64 bit OS. I recommend the Illinois D/L sites. THey have very fast d/l times. |

Pretty much any Linux distro can run in x86_64.
My distro of choice is Gentoo, however. |

Actually, Debian Stable does not have X64 support. It will as soon as Etch moves to stable, but at this time, there is no "official" x64 Debian support.

Actually ISPs that use Debian are using the stable branch. Our web host from way way back did. |

Unless he's putting it on a server. Then he probably wants stable. This is one of the things I love and hate about Debian. When Debian labels something as stable - it is damn stable. Unfortunatly by the time something gets to stable, its rather outdated. The default install for Sarge includes the 2.4 kernel. You can install 2.6, but you have to select it.
My server runs sarge. |

only reason to use stable is IF your putting it on a server... And even then unstable will work, if you get the right snapshot of the software, just don't for the love of god use testing... |

I agree completely. If you want stable, then use stable. If you don't feel the need use stable, there is no point in using testing, go straight to unstable. I run sid on both my laptop and desktop, and I haven't had any issues - well, I had a bitch of a time getting the ATI fglrx driver installed on my desktop, but I'll blame ATI for that, not Debian.
As far as I know, it isn't too long now until Etch becomes stable. Then Debian will have an official stable x64 version. |

no etch is being pushed through right now, haven't gotten to a package freeze yet, but etch should be 2.6.18 from what I was reading... and all of the module packages are being compiled against that and tested with it. |
