|
Ok, i havent upgraded my home PC in a long time, and its time. Im pretty much going to start building a brand new system, reusing only minimal items such as the case, and perhaps the RAM.
Problem is, I am out of the loop when it comes to hardware. I use this mainly for gaming, World of Warcraft to be precise. I want to find a processor that will do all the new fun stuff like 64 bit and hyperthreading, etc, so that im ahead of the game for awhile.
Is Intel or AMD king of the gaming market now? And what are some suggestions in the $150 - $300 range? Thanks all! |

Right now there has been a lot of good reviews for intel's Core Duo Process that came out about a month or so ago. The price isn't too bad either I think the E6600 goes for about $280-$350. |

Intel Core2 Duo E6600 or E6700 FTW !
... but the Athlon64 X2 5000+ is still a very, very nice choice.
Remember that for gaming, CPU is important, but GPU is even more important. |

Well im upgrading from an AMD Sempron 3000+ 2.0Ghz, so this is a big upgrade for me
I see the 6600 here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115003
Why do these not support hyperthreading? |

Hyperthreading != Core2 Duo
Hyperthreading was for the Pentium IV HT line of CPU, which was faking having 2 core. The Core2 Duo line got 2 physical core on the chip, making it WAY better than the P4. |

Intel C2D E6600 is my suggestion, or go with the C2D E6400 if the budget is tight. |

You know what i hate and don't understand ? The price difference between the E6600 and the E6700. I just don't understand the 200$ price difference. |

Err, the E6600 and the E6700 both have 4MB of L2 cache.
The E6800 Extreme is not worth the price for now.
Anyway, to answer the original question, once again, i just read that the E6600 can be overclocked to E6800 speed, so save yourself 600$+ and get the E6600. Especially if it's only for gaming. If you're thinking about doing other stuff with your 'puta like Photoshop, 3D rendering, lots of video editing, then maybe the E6700 will be a better option... or save your money and get the quadcore that will cost you an arm, your house and a good chunk of your annual salary |
