I have a user on our network that is complaining that his computer is dropping connection. It is being used as a samba server and he has two nics connected, one which works fine and the other is the offender. He seems to think that it is a network issue, however I have done some debugging and checked the interface in which this connection is placed and everything seems to work fine, all the other people within the vlan have had no isssues whatsoever, nobody else connected to that switch have had any issues whatsoever. The computer is configured with a static IP, so there should be no issues with DHCP. So far, the only output that I have seen from the machine is this:

Code: Select all
NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out
tg3: eth0: transmit timed out, resetting
tg3: tg3_stop_block timed out, ofs=2c00 enable_bit=2
tg3: tg3_stop_block timed out, ofs=1400 enable_bit=2
tg3: tg3_stop_block timed out, ofs=c00 enable_bit=2
tg3: eth0: Link is down.
tg3: eth0: Link is up at 100 Mbps, full duplex.
tg3: eth0: Flow control is off for TX and off for RX.
smb_add_request: request [eb0e7c80, mid=6875] timed out!
smb_add_request: request [eb0e7c80, mid=6876] timed out!
smb_add_request: request [eb0e7c80, mid=6925] timed out!
smbfs: Unrecognized mount option nodev
SMB connection re-established (-5)
SMB connection re-established (-5)

Apparently it does this every 20-30minutes for a clip of 5-10 minutes.
I would think that considering this guy is a computer science prof, that he would know something about his own computer, at least enough to try the easy stuff like ifdown, ifup. But perhaps that is an asssumption I shouldn't make. Rolling Eyes
I just can't believe the network would be causing this without affecting other people. Anybody have any ideas?

I hate double posting but I played a bit of googlesleuthing and found this thread that suggests a bug in the tg3 driver when subjected to high volumes of traffic. It suggested running an eth tool -K eth0 tos off to resolve the problem. I suppose it is possible that he is pushing enough traffic through his samba server to cause this little defect, but until I talk to the guy I won't know if this will work or not and I'm still open to other suggestions. Smile

EDIT: He has checked back in with me and reported that when he ran the ethtool command that the output was:
Code: Select all
no offload settings changed

I'm assuming that means that running this command did nothing. He has currently turned off Samba and is doing some regular surfing and e-mailing and is then going to do some high level traffic again. So far he has not had the problem be reproduced since shutting off Samba.[/code]
