I was just going to ask how was I to get a "upstream" level. I will the next time I'm there.

Since I don't know what channel(s) are used for up & down, the last reading I took was in the neighborhood of around -5 to -10dbmV around ch. 80 or so into ther modem. I will re-measure.

Thanks for the address of that modem. Haven't seen that posted anywhere.

have you ever seen a docsys modem that wasn't 192.168.100.1? (I haven't?)

Also I've been in situations where I've been tech support for a corperation and the user can't get their laptop online, and I need to conferance in comcast (or comcast confrenced me in) and they say that address won't give them any usuful information...

Usually when I have them do this it comes up with a web page, has the make model and manufacture of the modem on there, and understatus it says something like "Cable Down" always makes their tech support crazy.

There have been a couple of instances where the 192 didn't work on the cable modem, however I think it was on an older modem and I can't remember what brand, Terayon is one and the other one, its a new one and I can't remember. Most of the newer ones have that firmware associated with them.
You could always contact the modem manufacturer and ask them. I know Motorola does cause well, I have a motorola modem, it isn't something that I learned working for the cable company.

Here is that screenshot I promised you, Bruce. That is what a normal downstream and upstream signal should look like. While it isn't exactly what the technican would see when he comes out, it is kinda what he would see.

If it is too much off of that, call and tell them you want a tech out, they can't deny you that. They'll tell you that you should troublshoot, and blah blah blah, but if there is a signal issue on the line, and the person that you are talking to is persistent as to not send a tech, ask them why. What exactly kind of problems are you having anyways? Are you dropping constantly? Slow speed? Sometimes a signal can look bad but things can be fine and if thats the case, then leave it alone, sometimes there is something wrong from the plant and it will correct itself automatically.

This is only the 2nd cable modem that I had my "hands" on and the first that I had a problem with. Remember, I'm a DSL guy.

The problem isn't the CC, it's on my end. Strickly low signal. It must be at the borderline right now. That can be handled with little problem. That's the easy part.

I was surprised to see the PC seeing modem through the router. I was expecting to have to bypass the router to gain access to the modem.

Ch 110 (711 MHz) is down and 38 MHz up. the modem showed a +10dbmV signal, but I measured a +1 dbmV signal and I know my SLM isn't that far off. Output was 51-52db and S/N was 40db.

My other surprise was he had internet access. No idea how as when I left there wasn't (through the router). The questionable signal level is around -8 to -10dbmV as this is where the handshake becomes iffy.

My experiance with digital ATSC/QAM tuiners told me to expect solid reception with signals as low a -35dbmV, so I was expecting something similar (not as low though). I'm surprised a data modem needs that high a signal when a digital TV signal can be almost non-exsistant (by comparision) and still work. Sad
