As much as people complain about the BOINC the seem to forget that the old seti was by and far not a scientific method for exploring the sky. If they had found something quickly they could claim some wonderous prize. As it was we were repeating the same WU's again and again without any rhyme or reason.

Clearly S@H had to do something to satisfy the science of their experiment and allow individuals have at least the same amount of freedom with the Processes. Thus we Have BOINC. BOINC is not perfect. I does however allow for crossover with other projects that would otherwise be lifelong project for a few individuals. Boinc provides these projects with the means to eplore their data and get useful data back in a reasonable amount of time.

I like BOINC and I think I will stick with it. I can't imagine working the project as before in a non- scientific way

SU is right. The community spirit that was there with the original SETI project is just not there any more. BOINC may technically be a better and more relevant platform but it is more academic minded and less community minded than SETI ever was.

Its like comparing the "drive in" experience of 30 years ago to the HD home cinema today. Sure the image quality was crap and the dinky little speakers you hooked onto your window left a lot to be desired but there was an atmosphere at the drive in that can never be created in a home cinema.

Ahh, memories ... I wish we could go back

BOINC is not very Network Friendly, so I cannot put it on a lot of machines I control. I have 4 computers at home, but only one is on and running 24/7. One of them never connects to the Internets.

For almost 2 years, I used to spend an hour a couple times a week digging up users' e-mail addresses, and SPAMing them to join LWD. I ended up with 176 Recruits who stayed. And never even collected the final stats. Once, when another team disbanded, I got about 30 people to join in ONE DAY. When someone joined, if they had a profile, I could check to see if their e-mail address was in my database. I ultimately SPAMed almost 3,000 users.
