I'n my new case I'm hooking one fanless 350 watt psu and one very silent (fan can turn off) 400 watt. Why and how and what-not I will write about in an article (as soon as I get confirmation about editors and that we actuall CAN submitt articles). Hint.

I have a question for the more electrically trained people:

How should I hook the stuff that wants the power?

I have 3 SATA drives, 3 PATA drives.
1 DVD burner.
P4 motherboard. 3.2 upped to 3,6) (no CPU fan)
ATI 850XT (no fan)
3 120 mm fans (low speed, 12v 0.12A)
1 80 mm fan. (low speed 12v, 0.08A)

All the fans on one?
All the Hard drives on one?
What?
How?

Nice of you to confirm. communication is paramount. I'll not cement anything but keep it loos. Will there be guidelines too?

yes, there will be guidelines. We could also use some help.

Doing it all ourselves wasn't the intention.

Now to your point. I would split the power between the two supplies, ie part of the system on one and part on the other. Looking at dual bussing would be even better.

I opted for a 400 watt PSU for the second one.

Other than that it is no change.

start adding up the watts...

I would put all of the moving parts on one power supplie personally... so hard drives, dvd drives, fans, etc.... and then put everything else on the other one. (motherboard, gfx card... anything else that might draw power)

The exception being anything that the motherboad NEEDS to stay safe (heat sink fans, maybe system drive if you can afford the extra load) it would be a shame if one power supply cut out and the other one kept going and you cooked your board.

Yes, that is a good point. Don't take any suggestion I takes seriously, but maybe put the Mother Board on the same power as the fan? I don't know...

No critical fans in there. Motherboard, CPU and GPU is water-cooled.

The machine is up and running now.

I ended putting the 350W PSU on the Motherboard. The 400W takes the rest. GPU, storage drives, fans. As Edison Rex helped me figure out in the chat the 120 mm fans take a little over a Watt each. The hard draves I figured for about 10W each (some data here). That should leave plenty of juice for the GPU.

I did it this way to test if the 400W would be hot enough to force its fan to start. It has one of those sensors that lets it turn on and off the fan based on temperaturs.

So far the fan has stayed off.

I'll probably hook the GPU up to the 350W one later.

I like tinkering. (Not as much as I like boobies and beer, but still.)

Oh: I found this link very useful. It is a bit old but still gives an idea of things concumption.
