I've let the smoke out of a few hard drives in my time
it's always cool as hell to watch (tho the sound can really suck if you get a head crash when it happens)
what size HD was it anyway ?

This post makes me remember the time I fried my Riva TNT while running 3D mark at too high of a res... it didn't burst into flames, but the smell was definitely a sign that it toasted... HEHEHE [} ]

Had a hard-disk controller chip blow up over summer.
Some guy said his puter was making funny noises so we opened the case and fired it up. There was a smoky smell but nothing visibly wrong. Looking at the HDD later, something had bubbled its way from the middle of a chip to the outside and a sooty mark the shape of a comet's trail carried on across the PCB... not as good as flames but still a pretty impressive looking battle-scar!!!

Saw a 386 chip blow up once.
My first attempt at overclocking.
Was 20mhz, tried it at 80mhz in my new mobo, heard a VERY high pitched whine, POW!
I was 8.
Good times... [ ]

I had a Dell monitor smoke, and it stank bad. I stuck with my Compaq monitor then.

I had a powersupply blow up at work!
It was great the building was evacuated and closed for half an hour. Black smoke started billowing out of the back and filled the case. Then the power cords to the motherboard started on fire. It was sweet!

Bugger! My friend's HD just went up in smoke. He called me to see if I had a bootdisk as his puter wouldn't boot.
After much fiddling with IDE cables, I thought I caught a whiff of something smoky.
What do you know, one of the controller chips burnt out (deja vu?) and took out one of the pin connects with it!
I already know the answer but is there any way to recover any data off the disk?
If it was anyone else I'd just tell them "sorry, your data is now with the big BBQ in the sky" but he'd quite like to rescue his final year dissotation!
I'll educate him in backups later but for now, can anything be done :

You'd probably need to mount the platters inside another hard-drive, but this isn't really something you can do yourself. It'll probably be expensive as hell to get done too, with no guarantee that the data is still there.

No guarantee, but the success rate is quite high. But it is expensive |
