|
I have implemented some very selective IP range bans.
Most of the IP ranges are, not surprisingly, in India. But I also have banned a subnet of PanAmSat, specifically a subnet of servers which have been correlated. It would be self defeating to do too much range banning.
This is a direct result of the collection of IP addresses in the spam messages. It has allowed me to correllate geographically where the shots are concentrated.
This should not affect any of our active members.
Regarding post count prerequisites for posting in For Sale and Hot Deals, I don't think it is going to do anything but encourage the spam to migrate to other forums, where we have enough of it already. I am researching the scripts that do these sort of things. I don't think code modifications are really going to help. I think Fido has made that clear in the past, and I think FatherTyme agrees with me. |

Yes, Evil One, thy will be done.
Good things, these actions. I agree with your deduction that spam can migrate.

Effective immediately all members who have an account on mail.ru are banned. This will have the side effect of preventing new registrations from prospective members coming from mail.ru. Considering that we have not a single legitimate account from mail.ru, except possibly Oleg's LonelyKnight account, I don't think this will have any impact whatsoever on our active membership.
If you have been banned because of your mail.ru account, try changing to a provider that doesn't support spammers. (yes, ironic, they're banned so they cannot read this). I have no problem losing them at this point. I can think of some particular Russian domains that we have no reason to believe will have legitimate traffic to this site. |

It's not all about phpBB MODs. There is a lot to Taking Care of The Place. Those MOD things make the site code less stable and change control gets compromised during upgrades of the site code. Yes, we want to look at them but also look at the problems they are trying to fix.
And I am learning some from my research. A lot, in fact. When I was deleting the spammers yesterday and today, I looked at all (200+) of the mail accounts. How many russian mail accounts do you think I found?
This should have some immediate results. They might very well swap mail accounts to somewhere else, but that gives me an idea of the next spam-friendly maildrop site. It's like tennis. Make them run around, not us.
Anyway, I believe there are existing strategies we can use. One of them is active management of the site. It's why Fido asked me to help. |

Class B network 59.177.*.* is banned. Owner is Bharat On Line.
I will send a notice to them and I will register a complaint on behalf of LittleBlackDog.com. Will also check them in with Spamhaus. |

Another one bites the dust. list.ru is now banned. The spammers don't seem to be trying very hard to change, and when they go to yahoo.com I'll be able to more reliably report them, but so long as they keep using spammer friendly russian servers, well, we'll keep getting spam from them. Not.
If you are a legitimate user of list.ru and you wish to register here, send an email to the site admin account. I have not seen any to date, and don't expect to, but you never know. Fido might correct me if you send mail to the admin account.
You've been notified anyway. |

Psst. Someone I know tried to join today, but she did not get a confirmation e-mail. We have not determined if her @ work server disallows LBD for the "Pr0n" content.
Her name is Tai Shu Me or something. |

Since she used her work address to receive the confirmation email, it is possible that their local spam filter might have blocked it. We can activate the account for her if she would like, but we'll need a working email address. |

Embarrassing as it may sound, I did not know my correct e-mail address when I registered here (twice). Both of these screen names were not activated. Can they be deleted?

Admitting it is the first step.
