Welcome to the forums, Andrew.m1971.

I had an old Sony laptop which lost its fan speed control, I found the supply to the speed control part and just went to the nearest +5v source. If you have a multimeter you can probably figure out the nearest +5 supply. Do make sure it's not the fan itself first, a lot of those fans are cheap Chinese shit and don't last.

Be careful in there though. Don't blame me if you arc something being careless with the probes.

Oh yeah and vaccuum everything out while you are in there, especially any fins you find. Use a toothbrush and some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to clean them. The dust really makes a difference.

There is +5 usually on one side (the + side) of any electrolytic capacitor, or any tantalum one. If you don't know what those are, don't attempt to find one with a probe.

You could try a wire jumper and just try playing around. But it's dangerous because the fan takes considerable current and could cause more damage.

This is why I said to do it that way.

Thanks EdisonRex for your help. Ive decided to build a 6 fan cooler pad as most of the ones you can buy draw the air from under the pad and not do much. The one ive built has the fans drawing the cool air from a pannel at the top behind the screen then forces the air under the laptop and directly into the intake of the laptop. Ive had to power it through a seperate power supply though as it would have been to much for the USB !!!
Now with the new and improved pad it runs at no more than 56c before it was getting up to 69c and shutting down.

A wise decision, albeit probably a bit noisier. Do hoover out the inside of the air vents if you haven't done so.
