I will be contributing more articles to LWD, once this project is finished. I would like to write a few tutorials for Linux and some general opinion pieces (SCO vs Linux comes to mind). As much work as I see Squito doing over there, contributing news articles, original material helps a lot too. He shouldn't be so lonely. Smile

It might help if the "next" chapter tags at the bottoms of each S's E chapter get linked to the next chapter, as they appear.

I was thinking that the Articles page on LWD might perhaps have a longer list than 85 articles ....
or is that 'cos i'm not logged in there.

latest chapters are 4689 ... bit higher than 85

A few changes may be in store for LWD pretty soon that will make it much easier for everyone to contribute to the site.

Still early stages, technical things, and a few discussions I need to have with others.

Well, Edison, I have read all the articles to date, but I am somewhat confused. I am not convinced that any laws have been broken, so pardon me if I am playing Devil's Advocate here.

You 'nick' is just that: a nickname, or a self-selected name which may have meaning only to you, as opposed to your legal name. You are not being libeled if someone decides to use your nick at another internet location. You are only entitled to your nick at places you have registered it. I am not trying to be contrary. I have been following this and completely understand your frustration, but I do not think there are legal repercussions. The way I see it, no matter how distinctive your nick is, it is still an anonymous name that protects your real identity, and probably should never be associated with your real name.

Also, we tend to call it SPAM, but when someone posts unwanted commercial messages on an internet forum, that is not literally SPAM. SPAM is Unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, and not a message posted on a bulletin board system. At least, that is how I interpret anti-SPAM legislation. Posting a commercial message in here is not illegal, just against the internal rules as set out by the owner of this website.

Depends on the legislation some of them are written so broadly that they can include popup ads, and regular inpage ads... basically any unsolicited advertisement on the internet.

Doesn't ALL ADVERTISING fall into the category of unsolicited and unwanted ? Undecided

tom,

Let's see what Andrey thinks about the person running a shell account on his site. And let's see what the California antispam law thinks. And as for my nick, is it a crime to steal online details and use them without authority? My real name is known to this joker.

In any case, there is law, and then there is adherence to an acceptable use policy, and there is the relationship between ISPs and the whole idea of what is SPAM that is brought out of the discussion. The whole idea of doing the research into what happened is because I have not seen this done with BBSPAM before.

The idea of ethical behaviour is part of this exploration. What can be done to prevent this is another part of the discussion. Part of last night's chapter was to explain what we're doing. It all takes time, and in order to do a good series overall, which I hope I am doing, I will be trying to tie together more of the pieces. It's not just about my nick being stolen.

The story is as much about ethics and education as it is about the law.

Gonna take a day or 2 or 3 off to gather up for the next article. It's time to get over the personal issue of my nick, and get onto the real issue, which is that the game isn't free at all, and the bigger educational problem of BBSPAM.

Which is part of a larger issue of unwanted and unwarranted intrusions onto people's computers which should be breaking and entering crimes.

That is already a crime and is one of the subjects to be discussed. I will be taking off a few days from writing in order to compose enough pieces which will tie the story together. Fathertyme suggested pictures and graphics too, I hadn't been using them because I didn't know where to host them from. The article has had a lot of reads, I've noticed, and that in itself is doing the first thing I wanted to do, which was to shine a light on some bad actors. That part seems to be successful, but there is more to do.
