TNN picked up these postings on the Sydney Morning Herald web site as they unfolded over the duration of the game.
We publish them here as they appeared unedited.

This seriously would definitely be the greatest comeback in sport, easily the greatest cricket match, and definitely australias darkest day!
I will never watch a game of cricket again.
i am truly inconsolable.
No matter what else happens in the future of world sport, We will always be remember as the greatest, cardiac, epliptic, cerberial CHOKE since Goliath!
ok seriously kill me so you can ease the pain
Posted by: Kill me now at March 13, 2006 03:22 AM
Absolutely amazing!
Congratulations Smith you really stuck it to them!
Its always great to see Australia lose in the cricket but this was phenomenal!
Good onya Bracken, you may have dropped Gibbs but you're the only Aussie that held onto the cup.
Greatest match ever!!

Nice to see a world record last so long. What a game !! I'd have liked to know what was going through Ponting's mind when he thought it would be a good idea to bowl Lewis. I'd have thought either of the Clark(e)'s would have been better.
I think that performance (taking nothing away from the jappies) was appaling. Talk about defeat from the jaws of victory.
Sigh !!!!
Posted by: woops !!! at March 13, 2006 03:21 AM
How can you not defend 434? The two largest run chases in history have been against us, and we held the highest one day total ever for what... 3 or 4 hours.
We just don't seem capable of bowling out a game anymore. The last 10 overs of close games we seem to get smacked around too much.
Oh well... off to bed.
Posted by: Wow at March 13, 2006 03:18 AM
Dizzy could of bowled left handed and got better figures then 0-113 !!
Posted by: quin at March 13, 2006 03:18 AM
Ponting brings a shoulder of strength to the australian team but today some serious lapse of judgement cost the aussies the game. *Very disappointed*.
Posted by: pzlxsh at March 13, 2006 03:18 AM
Good work Saffas...you guys deserved it! BIG TIME!Lewis...shouldnt have been playing!! Great series! Bad bowling by Lewis!
Yes...The loss hurt, not gonna read any newspapers on watch the news for a long time! haha!
Australia you guys proved we are chokers! Yikes!
Posted by: JC at March 13, 2006 03:17 AM
I guess Mick Lewis has played his last game in Aussie colours. Lee and Clark under bowled - what was Ponting doing out there? World record holders for a few hours, Warney has egg on his face - we choked!
Posted by: Trev at March 13, 2006 03:16 AM
Why on earth was Lewis bowling ... I cant believe he was left on .... full creit to SA though .... How can a team score 434 in a 1 dayer and loose ....
Posted by: shocked at March 13, 2006 03:15 AM
Feel sorry for Lewis???? Why was he bowled...
Congrats on the worst one day bowling figures ever
Posted by: dunko at March 13, 2006 03:15 AM
Hey aussie
You have serious problem in bowling without McGrath.
Find one soon. And yes no offense but hope not to see Mick Lewis again

Wow, Smith was right. What a collosal choke from the Aussies, heh.
In all honesty, full credit has got to go to South Africa. What a remarkable performance.
Posted by: Chris at March 13, 2006 03:14 AM
Amazing cricket, only wish I had FOXTEL TV in Washington DC, WELL DONE SA, the monkey's finally off your back!!
Posted by: Boggy at March 13, 2006 03:14 AM
I guess...we now know who are the chokers!!! AUSTRALIA!!! COME ON!! What the heck was that...why let lewis bowl?!!?!? What a match though!! I give it to the Saffas! You guys deserve it! Good knock by Gibbs! Amazing game Saffas...Thanks for a great game!!
WHat the heck Aussies?!?!?
Posted by: JC at March 13, 2006 03:14 AM
omg mick lewis.. why did ponting bowl the worst bowler for 10 overs? WHY? WHY???
Posted by: MICKY at March 13, 2006 03:13 AM
There will be questions as to why Lewis was given a full ten, but Lee was not... the worst figures ever...
Great Match though - well done SthAf
Posted by: Glenn at March 13, 2006 03:12 AM
Smith, I eat my words. Australia are the worst chokers in the history of cricket.
Congratulations SA, that was the all-time greatest performance in One-Day internationals.
Posted by: Hussdawg at March 13, 2006 03:12 AM
SA achieved the miracle. Brett Lee was brought in too late to stop the damage. Why didn't they bowl Michael Clark or Andrew Symonds?
Posted by: tux at March 13, 2006 03:11 AM
Chokers.
Posted by: sfdoddsy at March 13, 2006 03:11 AM
That hurt.
Posted by: quin at March 13, 2006 03:11 AM
mick lewis should have his australian passport revoked. on the whole, very disappointing. shouldnt have lost that one.
Posted by: angry australian at March 13, 2006 03:11 AM
Ponting = Stripped of captaincy
Lewis Never play anything above club cricket 3rd division ever again
Posted by: steve at March 13, 2006 03:09 AM
omg what a match
I guess we were the chokers after all
Posted by: kochy at March 13, 2006 03:09 AM
Full credit to the South Africans to chase that one down.
I cannot understand the decision to bowl lewis at such a critical stage when had such poor figures.
I can't wait to hear all the sh*t from the SA camp as they find their voice again.
What an amazing game... i don't know how to feel.
Posted by: Stephen at March 13, 2006 03:07 AM
God this is frustrating to follow from Europe with no TV...
Posted by: Andrew at March 13, 2006 02:59 AM
why is lewis bowling??
Posted by: art at March 13, 2006 02:56 AM
That over from lewis really stuffed us... he was going at 10 an over and lee at bout 7... why not bowl lee (46th over)
Posted by: Stephen at March 13, 2006 02:54 AM
Why bowl lewis who is going for 10 runs an over when you have three left from lee.
Posted by: Stephen at March 13, 2006 02:51 AM
Don't write the Proteas off so quickly. They might just pull off the win of the century.
Posted by: Megan at March 13, 2006 01:43 AM
Well, seems I spoke to soon. SA are going to get this.
Nice one boys! You deserve it!
Posted by: Hussdawg at March 13, 2006 01:40 AM
so just the mindset then you reckon...
That was rather rapid considering 20/20 has only gone global in the past year.
I believe the wickets have become too batsmen friendly(i.e NZ's) to induce an inflated TV viewers total.
Posted by: JK at March 13, 2006 01:18 AM
Twas only several years ago that 280+ was considered a top total and 260+ very challenging.
Is it the batman friendly wickets, technology of the willows, a downturn in quality bowlers, or just the general 50 over mindset?
Any ideas folks?
ED: How about the advent of Twenty20 cricket?
Posted by: JK at March 13, 2006 01:03 AM
Seems like South Africa are at least giving it a go, I'll be surprised if they get within 150 though. Unbelievable by the Aussies.
Posted by: Rob at March 13, 2006 12:37 AM
I see limpet Dippenaar threw in the towel once he realised he couldn't grind out his usual 100 from 150 balls...
Posted by: JK at March 13, 2006 12:21 AM
Smiths batting slump is possibly caused by the rather large fried egg constantly covering his eyesight ...
Posted by: JK at March 13, 2006 12:12 AM
Can Smith spell humiliation?
Posted by: Peter at March 13, 2006 12:05 AM
East or West, Australia is the best!!
Howz that Graham Smith?
Posted by: Raj at March 12, 2006 11:42 PM
It's possible Smith's batting slump is caused by poor footwork, most
of the time they appear to be in his mouth.
Posted by: Philip B at March 12, 2006 11:37 PM
Let's bowl them out for 134 now! Ooh aah where's Glen McGrath?
Posted by: Al at March 12, 2006 11:36 PM
Smith's captaincy must now be tenuous at best.
His choking comments fired up Ricky and the team followed. Ricky may not be a tactical genius but he leads from the front and the boys follow. Smith on the other hand has lost the confidence of his team. The South African bowling and fielding were woeful. They threw in the towel. Disgraceful.
World Record. Congratulations.
It was a privelege to witness.
What's the record for biggest winning margin?
We should win this by 300 runs.
You gotta love being an Aussie.
Cheers.
Posted by: quin at March 12, 2006 11:35 PM
The Aussies really should have declared after realising that they had choked and were not able to reach 500.
Posted by: Stu at March 12, 2006 11:16 PM
omg ponting, greatest innings ever.
Posted by: Jeffrey at March 12, 2006 11:16 PM
HAHAHHA Smith. Australia scores 434. Absolutely amazing, teaches Smith to shut his mouth!
Posted by: Jeffrey at March 12, 2006 11:16 PM
South Africa are yet to bat, but I wouldn't bet on them getting 430 odd. You have to believe that all of that huffing and puffing by Smith was just alot of hot air....the Aussies are smoking and the Saffers are choking.
Posted by: Paul at March 12, 2006 11:15 PM
does anyone know if there is a website where i can d/l this massacre from??? im spewing that i missed aus finally break the 400 mark.
Posted by: wongtons at March 12, 2006 11:11 PM
Thanks Graham Smith. Its been hard for the Aussies to motivate themselves for yet another round of meaningless one day games but you've given Ricky the all the ammo he needs to fire himself and the rest of the boys up.
Could there possibly be a hole deep enough for Smith by the end of that innings- We'll see now who chokes under the pressure of having to get 435 to win.
I predict the record for the greatest winning margin will also go tonight.
(So glad also that Damien Martyn was left in the sheds- otherwise we could NEVER have made 400.)
Posted by: SS at March 12, 2006 11:09 PM
Not a bad score...434! I wish I had Foxtel.
Posted by: big steve at March 12, 2006 11:08 PM
4-434, Ponting/Husseys 150+ partnership at more than 10 runs an over. Amazing, nothing more needed to say. Dare I say there's something for Mr Smith to choke on.
Posted by: John at March 12, 2006 11:08 PM
4/434!!! Isn't it great to have Foxtel on? Smithy will be lost for words for a change.
Posted by: alv at March 12, 2006 11:05 PM
That Graeme Smith is a rather unlikable chap isn't he?,wow 1/167 after 25 overs I just read that above, shaun pollack is a huge loss for S.Africa and AUStralia look hot to trot, man I wish it was on free to air or even the radio,no way am I paying 50 bucks a month for 30 channels of crap
Posted by: antmiester at March 12, 2006 11:02 PM
Goodnight South Africa, thanks for playing.
Posted by: Hussdawg at March 12, 2006 11:01 PM
Unbelievable batting & I can't see it becuase Foxtel stuffed up installing the Digital box this week!!
Posted by: Rafters at March 12, 2006 10:54 PM
Graeme Smith will choke on his every arrogant word.
Posted by: Jag at March 12, 2006 10:36 PM
Come on Tonk, more commentary!
Posted by: The Mul at March 12, 2006 10:33 PM
Mr Smith, haven't you figured out yet that your stupid comments only serve to fire up the Aussie batsmen. Keep talking....
Posted by: Oz Phantom at March 12, 2006 10:28 PM
Choke on that Smith! 300 off 40!
Posted by: Hussdawg at March 12, 2006 10:02 PM
Wife has 'Love my way' on the telly so can't watch the match but is Australia batting well, South Afirca bowling poorly or is it just the short Wanderers boundaries?
Posted by: Jason at March 12, 2006 09:37 PM
Punter for PM
Posted by: monas at March 12, 2006 09:05 PM
whoa, the kat just hit a six. finally, something more than just occupying.
Posted by: Jag at March 12, 2006 08:08 PM
Pollock is a big loss for the Proteas both physically and mentally. He is in great form at present, and even when he isn't producing results his presence provides composure and stability that his team mates feed off. His absence will be a giant hurdle the Africans have to avoid before they even have to face the full strength, pumped up aussies.
START HERE. DEDUCT 9 HOURS FROM THE TIME OF POSTING I.E. FIRST AUSSIE POSTING AT 08:08 PM WAS AT 11:08AM SA TIME. Game Started at 10:30am |

We are still having a HUGE battle here at work with the Aussies.
They ahve changed their tune all of a sudden and now it is all about the 5 day test and no longer about the ODI.
And Chuck has come out in force. |
