pitty most microsoft software isn't designed to work with em yet.

Linux however Laughing

Actually, WinXP and WinServer2k3 should work just fine... as long as the license level is appropriate.

But with AMD and Intel going more for parallel cores, MS is going to have to re-eval their licensing structure.

or they could be asshats and watch UNIX take more market share Smile

they're gonna have to re-think it - and fast Smile

I can see they'll try and charge more for a 'decent' pc sooner tho Sad

suffice to say, i won't be giving them any more cash. I'll just use Linux wherever I can Smile

an interesting thought... however if your going to get your "decent" box, then you'll be needing to be installing wine inorder to play games on them boxes.... and that would just be a straight out mess... though I think we are probably headed that way...

From what I hear from our MS rep they have already thought this through and will be licensing per socket rather than per core.

Indeed. But the only real software this will affect are database servers (Orcale for instance) and in the 3D rendering field, render engines such as Mental Ray. The 2 mentioned companies however, prolly don't give a hoot what MS thinks.

Even if MS has that mentality with their products, right now you can't just buy Windows XP off the shelf and have it *recognize* more than 2 cores. Hyper Threading is a different story.

Licensing aside, XP Pro just won't handle 4 cores. The server editions perhaps can, but regardless of MS' stance on per socket licensing, those Windows Server editions are still more expensive but necessary to utilize all 4 cores.

I'm going to *hope* that MS has dealt with this issue in Vista (ie. allow it to run on two CPU's but multiple cores per CPU). I'm not going to hold my breath though. Vista has been in development since dual-cores were just an idea so ....

and I'm going to keep hopeing vista cures cancer as was originally promised with longhorn before they scrapped that for something they could actually produce in time to release it with in the next 100 years.

I have also heard how true or not I do not know but...That MS is going to be doing the liscensing for a certain ammount of mobo's per liscense.
But I do not know how true that is because you could use it on multiple computers. But that sucks for people like me that change there mobo's like shirts. Like I said though that is what I heard so i do not know how true or not if I hear anything more I will post up.
