Post Posted: Sat Jan 21, 2006 11:38 am   Post subject: AMD heatsink replacement advice Reply with quote Back to top

Greetings all,

My new media PC is pretty loud compared to a standard PC. Its in a P180 case. When I opened the case, I realized the noisy suspect is the AMD stock heatsink. Its the AMD 64 X2 4800 processor.

When I bought all the parts, I included in the purchase one of these: http://www.systemcooling.com/thermalright_si-120-01.html, but it was too big to allow one of the power cables to clear so I had to return it. I read somewhere that at "normal" speeds (i.e. not overclocked) the stock heatsink is quiet and cool enough. That is not correct.

I want a new CPU heatsink and fan so I can reduce the noise level. There are hundreds of choices on New Egg and I don't know which is good. There are some with no reviews and most will have at least one or two reviews that say something negative.

So help me pick a quiet heat sink! If it helps, I will not overclock (too paranoid). It needs to be at least the same size as the stock unit - but can be slightly taller and wider (that four pin power cable has to clear it - bottom mounted power supply).

How about the slightly-smaller Thermalright XP-90c with a Panaflo, NMB or Papst fan?

If you like everything about the heatsink you had but just the cable is to short ...... How about just a cable extension for the P4 cable??

Get one of those Zalman. My friend got one and i can barely hear it. You have to stick your ear to the case to see if it's working or not.

The plain old aluminium XP-90 with an Antec TriCool 80mm fan on the lowest setting (silent) does the trick here - we run an overclocked AMD 64 X2 3800+ in the Antec Sonata, for what that's worth - wBig SmileBig Smilef!

Thanks everyone!

That XP-90c looks very good - and I didn't realize a P4 power cable extender was available. Of course, I didn't even look....

I have the P180 case and a Zalman CNPS9500 HSF . I run all the fans on the lowest settings and idle around 38 or 39 C . I dont really care about the temps as much as the noise .

Ya know, you could probobly just replace the fan instead of the whole heatsink, save yourself some money and make it a lot quieter all at the same time.

the power cable that was too short is more likely to be the 20 pin socket.
you can get a 20pin cable extender ....
pity this has no image.
and that page doesn't say that it is the 24 pin cable.
looking ....
