What is Climate Prediction?
Climateprediction.net is the largest experiment to try and produce a forecast of the climate in the 21st century. The aim of climateprediction is to investigate the approximations that have to be made in state-of-the-art climate models. By running the model thousands of times (a 'large ensemble') we hope to find out how the model responds to slight tweaks to these approximations - slight enough to not make the approximations any less realistic. This will allow us to improve our understanding of how sensitive our models are to small changes and also to things like changes in carbon dioxide and the sulphur cycle.
Why?
Climate change, and our response to it, are issues of global importance, affecting food production, water resources, ecosystems, energy demand, insurance costs and much else. There is a broad scientific consensus that the Earth will probably warm over the coming century; climateprediction.net should, for the first time, tell us what is most likely to happen.
How Do I Participate
-First you will need to download and install the BOINC Client..
-Then you will need to create a Climate Prediction account
-Once you have created a CP account and you recieve your account information via email you will need to connect to the project. In the BOINC client click on settings, Attach to Project. The account id is the one that was emailed to you and the Project url is http://climateprediction.net
-Once you have attached to the project with BOINC you will then download your first work unit. You can now join Team LittleWhiteDog. This is all done on the Climate Prediction Site. Click on Your Account link and enter your account id. You now have access to your account. You can now go to the LittleWhiteDog Team page and click on the join link.
