I downloaded the 3 CD iso files, burned CDs and did an "Upgrade" install of Mandrake Linux 8.1 over my ML8.0. Seemingly no problem, except ImagMagik install failed, but the installer let me choose OK to continue the install.

The new initial setterupper "DrakFirstTime" ran OK, I chose KDE as default X-Windows. When I "startx" as reular user, I get the cutomary KDE desktop (KPanel, taskbar, and default Mandrake desktop icons on a solid blue wallpaper background - fine, noproblemo.

But from a root console, when I "startx" the KDE Loading animation comes up, KPanel & its taskbar appear, but the blue wallpaper+icons only flash on momentarily and then are replaced (or hidden behind) a solid blood-red wallpaper with NO icons - Plus it pops a Warning dialog (which I have since checked "Don't warn me again") that said running GUI as "root" is ill-advised, blah-blah.

I've verified in KDE Look 'N Feel that I've got the normal default KDE Desktop selected, but all I get is that bloody-red wallpaper (+Kpanel / taskbar) with No Desktop icons.

Anybody figure out to fix that?

New KDE is 2.2.1, the warning box can be deactivated (checkbox).
As for the root with bad desktop, may I suggest you delete your root's setting :

rm -rf /root/.kde

You'll need to enable them agin, but it should be the best and simplest way.
