Portable memory storage; pros & cons.

I'm looking to get one of these USB memory devices (didn't want to call them memory sticks) and wanted input on what to get or not get.
I don't have a specific use for it other than general data transfer, jpegs and maybe music.

These haven't been out that long and I question the long term use and reuse of these, how immuneare they to static and external EMF?

Also how about compatibility between different O/S's and chipsets and how they get or don't get recognized?

Hope all of that made sense. BTW, I'm running 2k if that matters.

All chipsets nowadays support USB (unless you have a very old 386 or something). Most (or all) versions of Windows would support it, and the Linux community is offering a lot more USB device support than before. I'm not sure about other OSes besides Winders and Linux, since I haven't tried them, but I assume most of them would at least kinda-sorta support them.

And they're called USB Thumb Drives. Wink

I recommend one. I couldn't think of what I'd necessarily use one for either, but I carry mine everywhere. I have a 256 MB one, but you can get a 1G memory stick for only a few dollars more than I spent.

The one Dell was supposed to send me, for free, never arrived, so I just ordered the 1 GB from Webster's link.

It will be great for when I need to work on a computer without a DVD (I don't have a CD Burner anymore). All my toolbox software is under a Gig...
