|
So one of my hard drievs has been making a weird clicking noise lately. I have a feeling its on its way out. The problem is that I have three hard drives all in a row in my case and no real way to be able to tell which one the sound is coming from.
So is there any other way I can tell which one is going?
Any suggestions at all about the situation? |

Make/model?
Maxtor and Seagate both have software you can use on the drive to give you some sort of status about their drives... |

Unplug two of them, see if the 3rd one clicks, if not plug another one in.... |

I have an old school Maxtor 20gig that has always made the most awful clicking noise, but not all of the time. It still keeps part of my file server happy. |

Western Digital something....
The data on it is not vital. Mostly like media files and the stuff that I would really want it already saved somewhere. I wouldn't be heartbroken if it went bye-bye, but I wondered if there was a way I could figure out which one so that I could replace it before it dies. |

Say no more.
You answered your own question as to whether or not it is going to crap on you.
Seriously...
If the clicking is non-stop, from boot to shutdown, just plug one in at a time to isolate the trouble drive.
I have a 2GB SCSI drive that makes a godawful clicking sound. It doesn't work. I had a western digital full of porn that made funny noises near the end of its one year life span.
Backup if possible and enable S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) within your BIOS if not already enabled.
Unfortunately if S.M.A.R.T. comes back bad during boot the drive in question is gone already or very sketchy. |

Hehe, yea I don't think I will buy a WD again. It's not clicking all the time. It happens quite randomly for like 7 clicks and then it stops. |
