squid is kind of the default proxy server for open source. Nice feature set, although it's had bugs in the past. Now fixed, I might add.
Good availability for unix and linux. Good caching too. Nuff said. |

Well I suppose I'll just use this thread to ask my question...
Erm... What's the point of using proxy except for security? |

caching of site content. Means that many site pages, and frame content, isn't actually loading down your outside bandwidth being loaded again and again. It only gets loaded once when content changes. People on the inside enjoy snappier web response, your network isn't as loaded down and the websites get less traffic. |

i think it is also to control which sites are allowed to be accessed and which are not.
every time we access the internet, we use the proxy server.. so if i have a proxy server in my LAN, that proxy server is like a gate between my LAN and the internet, because all computers get what they want only from the proxy. so why we dont use the proxy server to control the bandwidth too?
and by putting some authentication in the proxy server, the proxy serer will know which users is accessing.. so why i dont say that the user "admin" will have 20kbps bandwidth, and the other have 10kbps..
is there any way of controlling the bandwidth from the proxy server?
please tell me... |

if your using a BSD OS use the firewall pf + altq
altq will allow you to shape your traffic |

i read in the page you gave me.. really useful ^_^ thanks a lot
in the link you gave me it shows how to create packat queues based on IPs, networks, ports and protocols.
and there was an example saying how to create a queue for a user. but it was giving that user's IP using macros. so it wasnt really a queue based on users. it was actually a queue based on IPs.
what i wanted is a queue based on the user name regardless what ip he has.
for example, if i have a line with 2mb download and 2md upload. and i want Bob to have 1mb upload and download reserved for him. and note that Bob does have a specific computer, so he sits on any machine and logs in. and each time he logs in he may get another IP from the DHCP server. and what i want is to create a queue based on that user no matter what machine is he using or what IP that machine has.
can we do that?
how can we do that?
waiting to hear from you. thanks in advance.. |

You could just have every computer set up with a static IP from your router, and then you could just do it via IP Address... |

and what if a computer changed his IP to the manager's IP when manager's machine was down? then he will get high bandwidth and start ennoy the rist of employees. also when the manager comes, his ip will be reserved, so he will face some problems when he starts his machine.
can i put some authentication on the proxy server? and create queues based on the authentication? |
