You want to use Vinyl paint to avoid flaking. Normally used to repair vinyl seats and stuff. Limited range of colours tho.
Can't find the original url of the project that gave keyboard me my modding info, but this link will do.

Cool dropforge.
I just took the screws out and split it into two pieces, painted the top half metallic blue, bottom half metallic silver (and of couse I covered the circuitry using paper and masking tape). Screwed it back together, and now I have a nice blue/silver keyboard.
Simple, although it would look cooler to use vinyl paint and those letters, and lighting up the underside of the keys... I might mod this thing further, if I get an idea.
You can see the letters throught the blue paint if you look real close, and I can type without looking at the keyboard anyway, so it doesn't really matter. And then if I did need to look at them, I could. But usually I don't need to, so it isn't that big of a deal.
Enamel paint is working good... Same stuff you use for model cars, availible at Wal-Mart or any craft store. Had some blue and silver laying around in spray cans, though I'd use that.
Ah, I thought of something else I could do! I could make a palm rest, as seen on most Logitech keyboards. |

About that arm-rest thingy:
I'm going to make a frame out of 3/4" dowels, cover it with a thin layer of aluminum foil (or another cheap, malleable material) and then put a few layers of epoxy resin on it, paint, and then INSTANT ARMREST.
I seriously doubt anyone's done this before, but do you guys have any tips? How should I make it connect to the actual keyboard? I was thinking cut a small hole in the bottom of the keyboard and then simply get some type of plastic clips or something at ACE and resin them on to attach the rest to the board...
What do you guys think?
Glue on the frame components is drying downstairs, so we'll see what happens tomorrow when I piece it together...
Nite guys. |

Don't know... I'm guessing for a normal-sized one exactly 1 crapload. |

Depends on how much painting you do.
The airbrush, if you get it new, should have an adapter/regulator that can connect to a tyre valve. You misappropriate a car tyre and fill up to about 45 psi. Or look at converting a small lpg tank so you can fill it at the gas station. That is what I used when I first got my air brush. Lasted long enough to do a small paint job without the racket of a compressor. |

I would have said that was pretty poor.
Proper geeks are covered in spots, have glasses with lenses at least 1/4" thick, stink like a dead cat in the sun, and are either anorexic, or obese. |

Polyester Resin + Painted Plastic = BAD! Don't try it...
It works even better than paint thinner, and then it gets all gummy like partially dried Elmer's glue. And this was ~10 seconds after I applied it.
And no, I didn't mix in too much hardener - ~5 drops is all.
I think I may have just ruined a keyboard... |

*sigh*
Didn't Bam's description of what would happen when you applied paint thinner to a keyboard make you just the least bit wary about applying strange chemicals to plastic? |

I figured that Resin != Paint Thinner...
Plus it didn't damage the plastic at all, it got gummed up in the paint.
But I let it dry and then sanded it off, and now all is well.
Yay! |

Hmm... so the resin goes on over the foil, then you paint the epoxy.
Depends how think you make the epoxy layer. If its too think, it will bend and crack, the paint will flake off, and your'e screwed. Foil is really thin for such a task. You'd be better off taking some wood and carving out an armrest. Or take an old sock, fill it with rice or beans, and instant hand rest like like the ones you buy in the store! |

i did the paint thing a couple of years ago with an old keyboard and ended up chosing cleveland brown orange for my color. just hung the thing outside by the chord and painted away. it took a couple of weeks to work out the sticky keys, but the paint job lasted for about 2-3 years before it started to wear off. nice job on the blue. |
