First off let me tell you that I am100% Greek. If you trace the lineage up my family tree (on both sides) you will not find any ascendents who are not Greek for quite a while, but the following is disgraceful.
I was watching the Men's 200m Finals for Track last night and the fans were booing so loud that the race was delayed nearly 20 minutes, including one false start. Apparently the fan's displeasure stemmed from reports in a Greek newspaper accusing other countries of forcing the Greek sprinter (and reigning gold medalist) to withdrawl from the race. He withdrew after failing (and skipping) drug tests.
This is just disgraceful to think of something like this would happen.
HEre is the full article, it's too long to post:

first off, let me tell you that you are 100% american. you were born in this country and i bet your parents were too. even if they/you weren't neither you nor your parents have lived in greece for an appreciable amout of time in the last 20 years.

I watched the race and it was stupid. screaming so they couldn't start the race.
Apparantly, I haven't seen it but they were talking about it on the news today, the greek press is slamming the fans today for acting badly and embarassing their country. |

Good to hear. That combined with the abysmal attendance and other BS.....makes you wonder if the games really should have gone here or not. Who lost out to Athens anyways? |

Surely the one spectator shouting and screaming shouldn't have made that much noise. |

actually it was packed. Because they had a change at gold the tickets for the 200M were the most expensive of any event in the whole olympics. |

Its all Greek to me.
The supposed 'ideals' of the (new) Olympics have little real support from the competing nations.
It was set up as amatuer so that working class people could be excluded.
Nations have, are and will treat it as a form of war.
Many have been found using drugs or cheating.
Those who are in charge of the city selection for the next Olympics are on a permanent junket.
It appears that the city chosen is the one giving the most under the table.
Yet for all that; winning a Gold is one of the greatest things you can do
Folding runs a close second. ie No 1 of the losers. |
