Bastardized AMD64 targeting the low-end market. It dethrones the Duron as the low end product but the CPU itself is leagues better. |

The socket-A Sempron is based on the Thoroughbred or Thorton core, since it has no on-board memory controller. The Socket-754 version will be based on Athlon64. However, the ratings on Sempron are more optimistic than on AthlonXP and AthlonMP processors with the Thoroughbred core running at the same speed. Perhaps this table will help.

Not according to the AMD whitepaper. It is the current production replacement to the Duron, Going after the Celeron market.
BTW,I wouldn't bother knocking on low end procs. If they have a market, well... Intel for example still produces 80286 - 586 socket and surface mount procs, for different integrated applications. The 486 is still hugely popular in aerospace, because it is a semi-fast chip, that is faa approved and comes in EMI shielded versions. That chip poweres some of the computers in the most advanced airliner in the world, the Boeing 777.
Currently AMD still can't get thier procs to pass FAA tests(Any of them). Same with Pent 4. |

Sempron vs. Athlon
AnandTech wrote:If you're looking to limit yourself to 32-bit computing on the Linux desktop, the Sempron 3100+ cannot keep up with an Athlon 64 3000+ or even a 2800+. However, the 10% cost savings between the 2800+ and the 3100+ is much better than the 2 to 5% decrease in performance we saw between the two processors. |
