I think I'm going to cry.

Operation Flashpoint (which I have praised in a separate thread) requires DirectX 8.

I also want to play X-Beyond The Frontier and X-Tension but the voice is choppy all of a sudden, where it wasn't when I first got the game. I found out why. This quote is lifted from the official X site:
Quote:

One remaining issue of X-tension's voice output in combination with Direct X 8.0 can unfortunately not be fixed in the EXE. The game can sometimes disturb all spoken sentences by a few milliseconds in affect cutting off parts of words from the beginning and the end of sentences. This only happens since version 8.0 of Direct X! Microsoft has told us that this will probably be fixed with the release of Direct X 8.1! So for the moment the only solution we can offer is the suggestion to stay with older versions of Direct X (the X-TENSION installation will install Direct X 6 if no newer version is already present).

Arse.

Either I play one game or the other, and don't have them on my system at the same time, or use System Commander (or something similar) to dual-boot Windows 98 and Windows 98. Or I could dual-boot to Win2K and install OFP under Win2K. I think I'll go for the latter option.

I love Microsoft, I really do.

Maybe by changing the active partition.

Yeah, that'd do it, but it's too much like work.

I'm going to stick Win2K back on there anyway, so I may as well install DX 8 and OFP under Win2K, and leave Win98 for games which don't require DX 8.

Is this the way to install w2k and win9x without them knowing of each other?

If you use a boot manager program (for example System Commander, Acronis, etc.) then you can install each OS completely independently.

If you don't use a boot manager, but install Win98 first and then install Win2K afterwards then Win2K will be able to see all of the Win98 install, but Win98 will only be able to see the Win2K stuff if the Win2K partition is formatted as FAT32. Win9x cannot see any NTFS partitions (and you need SP4 or better for NT to see NTFS5). Your primary partition will have to be formatted FAT16 or FAT32 if you want to go down the dual-boot route.

A word of advice if you're going to dual-boot, learned this afternoon:

I had Win98 installed like this:

C: FAT32 (Win98)
D: Not formatted (waiting for Win2K)
E: FAT32 (Data/Programs to be shared between Win2K and Win98)

I installed a couple of programs onto E:, then I installed Win2K. I formatted D: as NTFS. Remember that Win98 can't see NTFS, so if I boot to Win98 now I see:

C: FAT32
D: FAT32

Win98 names each partition consecutively according to predefined rules. Something to do with Primary/Extended partitions and Master/Slave disks. It doesn't let you choose drive letters like Win2K does. Those programs I'd installed onto E: were now on D:, but all the config files and registry settings pointed to E:. Thankfully I'd not installed much on E: so fixing it was easy.

Something else to remember about this sort of setup: I've got DUndecidedE: set up so that I can share data & apps between Win2K and Win98. If you install a program under one OS you may also need to install it under the other OS so that each registry gets modified properly. You also need to be careful about overwriting important files.
