Which is better?
P4 with a Prescott core or Northwood core?

Which chipset?

Intel 865G + ICH5
Intel 865PE + ICH5R

Just want to set up a plain Jane system . P4 3.0 GHz

From what I've been hearing others in this very forum say, Northwood is better because:

- cheaper ($$ wise)
- cooler (temp wise)
- tends to perform better
- consumes less power

Northwood, I have one and its overclocked and its very stable and it still runs cool with the no temp increase.

I would say northwood. they are a little older but they overclock well and are a little more stable. The Prescott are still pretty new.

If nobody else will, I will say the important reason to choose the Northwood core. Straight from the whitepaper of the Intel LGA775 Prescott core. Intel is aware of the thermal linearity problem with Prescott, but choose to continue with development anyways.

My bottom line, "It just has to work" Get the Northwood, but for god's sake do your homework. This seems like a good place to start. Smile

Check the out the 3GHz Prescotts when they move to the 1066MHz FSB - until then my money is on the 3GHz Northwood (higher speed P4's seem to be throttling unexpectedly) - wBig SmileBig Smilef!

Gee, I guess I "did my homework" about 3 weeks ago. I got another 3.0 Northwood. But I didn't do it for God's sake. I did it for mine.

As far as I know these will only be available in the LGA775 configuration, and will command quite a high price. At this point I would assume go with a FX-51/53 proc. LGA775 is where I will ditch the P-4 platform altogether.
