Ok, I have Win2K on my main machine, and Win98SE on a Celeron 400. I would like to network them. I have two 10BaseT network cards, and a crossover cable. My main machine has DSL connected to a second 10BaseT nic(HP Brand). When I stick in the second card for the network it won't connect to the Win98SE machine, and my internet connection no longer works. I am just looking for a how-to article somewhere on hoe to do this. I really want to get the celeron on to some SETI work, but without the internet, it's a no go. ANyone?

When I first stuck a NIC in this box for my cable modem, my dial-up modem stopped working, even though WIN98 said everything was fine ? I moved the cards around (different slots) and found a combination that allowed the modem and the NIC to function together ... just because WIN98 says everything is working doesn't make it so ... I'm GUESSING there's conflict between those cards in their present configuration ... even though there isn't any evidence being presented to you by WIN98.

Actually it is Win2K that is giving me the problems. After I posted, I installed Win98SE as a dual boot on the Win2K machine, and with both boxes running Win98SE, I can set up the network with no troubles. I just can't get Win2k to see Win98SE. It isn't really a problem as I will only have the Celeron 400 for a couple of weeks, so for that time I will probably just leave them both running Win98SE. Cheers.

If you are using the SETI Driver on the machine that can connect to the Internet, you can share the folder that the SETI driver executable resides in. Then just map over to it from the other machine and double click the executable and it will work. Then only one machine has to have Internet access.

Where I am right now... there is one machine with a share that contains the SETI driver and all of the cached WU's. Then I have 3 machines mapped to the same share. They all work on the same 25 WU's, and if one machine dies or gets shut down, and the other ones finish a WU, they will just pick up where the last machine left off.

Now that is a neato way of working it. The problem is that I can't get the two computers to see each other on the network in Win2K, so I can't even map the drive. If I run Win98 on both machines, then they are on the same network. If I am in Win2K, then I have two separate networks with the same name. I will probably just set it up like you(Spot) have said, with both machines running Win98 for now. Right around Christmas I will lose the Celery 400, so until then I will just run Win98 on both boxes.

this is just a blind ass guess

but when you add the 2nd nic, it assumes you want it to have the same settings as the one currently in the box and i've seen plenty of occurances where windows assumes your connection to the "old" nic has moved, and it's mapping everything in the tcp/ip stact over to the new nic

I agree with Brain. If you wanted to, you could bind TCP/IP to one NIC in the server, and NetBeui to the other card that attaches to the 98 box.

Alright, I got it working. I can access the HD of the Win98SE machine, but if I try and access the Win2K machine from the WIn98SE machine, it asks for a password. I never assigned it a password, and I have tried using my admin password, and leaving it blank. Nothing works. Is there some default password, or is there somewhere to go to find out what the password is??

You have to enable the "guest" account on the NT box. It is disabled by default. Hope that helps. [Very Happy]

That was the ticket. Thanks for the quick response. All is good now. The celeron box does not have a CD drive, so to install things, I wanted to map to the DVD drive on my WIn2K box. Now I can. Cheers.[8D]

a slightly more secure way to do it is to create an account with the login name and password for the machine you want to be able to access the 2k box

I say slightly because this keeps everybody from having access, but we all know how easy it is to crack into win9x boxes

especially with all the hidden "features" M$ provided for the hacking crowd
