I just purchased an IBM thinkpad A22. It came with win98. I freaking hate win98 and i want to format and install either redhat linux or windows2000 pro.
Would I have any problems doing this? Has anyone (im sure) done this? Will I have to get the software that tells you how much battery life is left? etc etc....
thanks all |

Either one.
I'm running Win2K on a ThinkPad 600E right now. It installed all the relevant drivers out of the box. I was running in 1024x768 from first boot-up. Having said that, an A-series is somewhat newer than mine, so you'll probably want to go here for the latest drivers.
I love it. It's much better than Win9x and WinNT. Well, for my needs anyway.
As for Linux, I tried installing Mandrake 7 a few months ago. I remember seeing a battery meter. I can't remember much else about it. If you're comfortable with Linux then why not?

I 2nd that . . .
installed 2k on my 600e the day after i got it . . it worked great, and everything actually ran faster/smoother
then i tried running our craptacular dialing software to dial into the corporate intranet, and got the smack down !
but they finally came out with a decent replacement for that old dialing crap, and my new dell works fantastic under 2k
the only problem i had at all was figuring out which sound card i had (the drivers for win2k that were SUPPOSED to work with the sound card listed in the device mangler in win98 didn't work . . i still have an "unsupported" MPU emulator that i never got to work . . but atleast everything else was good out of box, and it's running great now
I even managed to change my boot logo to something nice and spiffy !

If you know what LINUX really is...then go for linux (good luck finding drivers & getting your RES right ). If not Win2k is THE software I personally recommend for laptops! |

The problem with alternative operating systems(like w2k and linux) on a laptop is getting the totally weird hardware to work. Sometimes you are in luck and everything works Out-Of-The-Box and sometimes you are happy when you get a POST.
And now the obligotorie links http://www.linux.com/howto/Laptop-HOWTO.html
