At home, I've got a primary Microsoft network (okay, at this point ENTIRELY Microsoft network, some Win 98, one Win XP, and a Win 2k server).

Considering that I use the server just for file/print sharing, and that I have file shares set up restricted based on user ID (set up on each of the Win 98/XP/2k boxes), is it possible that I might replace this server with a non-Microsoft (read: free or inexpensive) equivalent?

I want to still have the server for file/print sharing, and I still will need to be able to grant read access to some accounts, read/write to others, depending on each share.

Also I'll probably host a web server on that box too at some point.

Can I do this with a flavor of Linux?

Without changing my other computers away from MS operating systems (at least for now)?

And considering all of my networking/server experience is with Win 2k, would it be a task that is within my abilities?

That'll tell you what you need to know.

In a nutshell, you can do it with Linux and Samba.

I'll have to write to him with links to the boards.
