So I've spent much of this week setting up our new SAN at work. This monster is a HP EVA rack. For the uninitiated, the Enterprise Virtual Array is a giant pool of disks, from which you carve out partitions for whichever systems are connecting to it. This one has 8 shelves, currently each shelf has 5 disks with 148GB apiece, so the raw capacity at this time is just under 6 terabytes. This SAN will consolidate all of our files, email, and Oracle database storage from our VMS cluster and various W3K clusters.
To connect all of this together we just got two Cisco MDS 9216 Multilayer Fabric Switches which provides 2GB/sec fiber connections. The disks in the SAN are, of course, fiber attached as well. We're backing it all up with LTO tape libraries, which I just got two of.
It took much of today to configure the first switch, and it's finally got the right zones setup to keep Windows and OpenVMS away from each other. We haven't started allocating disk space yet.
Whew. 10 years ago, I could get 10GB into one rack. If we fill out the shelves, this thing can store 16.5 terabytes, unless I got bigger disks... |

New stuff, eh?
Congtats! Playing with new stuff is always fun. And the specs on that stuff are mindboggling. to say the least.
Oh... the old disks... where did they go? Any chance of getting some of them cheap(ish)? |
