|
During the install of Solaris 9 for x86 processors, it just sorta stops doing anything. I slap the CD in the tray and then boot up on it, start the install, configure keyboard, choose CD-ROM drive as install boot, and then proceed with the install. Oh and by the way, I downloaded Solaris 9 from the free binary site at www.sunmicrosystems.com, and got all of the required ISO's (The install CD, and software CDs 1 and 2). Anyway, after booting the installer program with the default parameters, it tells me how to navigate in the installer and such, and then it goes to kdmconfig. It autodetects everything it needs except for my video card. When I go to select it from the list, I don't see it so I select one that is a different model of the same series (I have an STB Velocity 128, but I chose a thing called a "STB Velocity 4MB"). Then I tell it I'm ready to test the KDM thing, and it waits for a second with a blinking cursor on the command line, and then my screen goes black as if it was loading the Desktop Manager, and then it just sits there indefinitely. I don't know what the problem is, because all of it works with Windows 98 and RedHat Linux 9.2, (RedHat and Windows both autodetected my video card...). I tried looking up my video card specifications on the internet so I could just not configure my graphical interface in the setup and then run xf86config later, but I couldn't find it! No site that I went to had the specs, or even had any STB products, and the STB website was not found with Firebird, and IE wouldn't load it either... I don't know what to do, please help guys! |

Sorry, I thought it was sunmicrosystems.com but it is just www.sun.com... But anyway, what should I do if my video card isn't supported by Solaris? I need to be able to use their X-Windows system, and I can't buy a new video card any time soon... Any suggestions?
Edit: Oh yea almost forgot. I know that all of the ISOs that I downloaded are valid becuase I checked their MD5SUMS, and they all checked out... Go figure. |

try one of the following
either try to find a more standard/generic XGA or VGA driver to see if you can get by the video hang (sounds like what is going on) or try to experiment with drivers for other cards that use that chipset (in your case this is a Riva 128). The driver you are loading is for a Riva TNT. That won't do at all. |

I've had similar problems with STB cards on Solaris & Linux around v 6 of RedHat, I often ended up putting in a generic with the settings for the chipset of the card. |
