I installed Debian (3.0r1) successfully, and chose all of the x-server packages i thought i'd need, and then when i got done with the install, i booted up and entered these commands:
apt-get install xserver-common
apt-get install xserver-xfree86
Then, i ran xf86config and configured all my stuff correctly, and then rebooted and typed startx. Well, it started firing up, and then it gave me some error (i'll edit this post later about that). what should i do? i tried getting xserver-common and xserver-xfree86 again and installing them, but apt-get said that i have the most up-to-date versions of these packages. anyone know what the heck is going on? |

Ok, heres the errors:
It does this a bunch of times where each time "res" is a different screen resolution such as 1024x768:
(II) VGA(0): Not using default mode "res" (insufficient memory for mode)
Then it says this:
Fatal server error:
AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0
Finally it says this:
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)
What the heck do you think is going on here?
And soup; I did configure the X-Server, and I thought that Debian was Unix? I didn't know it was a Linux distro...
Any help would be appreciated, thanks guys. |

you need to configure X.
I don't remember where it is on Debian Linux.. probably
/etc/X11/XF86Config.. edit it with your favorite text editor.
RTFM, and Debian is Linux not Unix.. like Gnu, "Gnu's Not Unix" either, and Linux is GNU-Linux, cuz Linux is just a kernel and it aint shiiite without GNU. |
