I auqired a copy of Apache and ran it on my Win98se machine.. Took me about 30 min to figure out the very basics. It worked cool. Granted i'm on a dial-up, but it's what i have been wanting to do for a while now, HOST MY OWN SITE!!! Tongue Smile
As soon as High speed gets here i will get a domain name and let er rip...
Only thing is how do i protect myself from intrusion? Black Eye Smile [XX(]

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
Thanks Fido!!

>>>>>>insert Brain's post here<<<<<<<<<

I imagine you would need some kind of firewall to protect yourself from incomming attacks. I've never run a firewall, so I can't recommend any to you.

I do, however have a freeware program that scans your computer for open ports so you can close off unused ports eliminating any hacking attempts. might be a good idea to run one a couple times to make sure you are all secure.

you want a broadband modem/router for your firewall. Linksys makes a few good ones, and SMC makes a good one. there are others out there too, but i'm drawing a blank.

most of these things also let you run a 10/100 lan on the "home" side of the router, and they only have your ISP granted IP showing to the outside world

they pretty much make you invisable from the "internet" side of the router, except for specific process you map as OPEN inside the router

it's a really sweet setup (I have one, and mine lets you do that with Dialup as well, as broadband) I have 3-5 machines on my home network at any given time and as long as I drag out my second switch I can have them all sharing my dial up connection at once(the router only has 4 "LAN" ports so I have to use a cross connect cable and add the 2nd switch in to get 5 on at once)

one other nice feature is that my router has it's own printer port. in windows, you just install this 500k driver, and you have a new printer port (PrtMate is the name of the new port) and all of your windows computers can print over the network. this is really handy, except i don't know how to get it working under Non-Windows OS's (my printer isn't BeOS capable so i haven't worked it out) but the windows machines can still USE the printer, even when some of the other machines are running Alt. OS's (for example my printer used to be hosted on my BP6.. but when i was in BeOS, none of the other machines could print to it with internet connection sharing)

I have the SMC model. the only reasons i chose this over one of the linksys ones are:

A) printer port
B) dialup sharing

There is NO spoon !
