Silent Drive

Get one for each hard drive. After long use, the heads in the hd get worn out and make a lot of noise. I also notice a lot of drives, because of age, develop a constant ambient noise that sounds lile "eeeeeeeeeeeeeee". Silent Drive shuts them up for good, now I can't tell if the drive is spinnning or not if it weren't for the HD LED.

Get quieter fans. I suggest Pabst fans. Under 3K RPMs. If you use a pair, one in front one in back, it should push enough air to keep your system cool.

Last but not least the CPU fan. I haven't found one I liked yet. But generally speaking with any fan in your system, replace them at least once a year or as often as you see fit. Anything with a spinning motor will eventually wear out and generate noise. Get fresh new fans, or get special padding to insulate noise and reduce virbrations.

Silent Drive Enclosure - though these things reduce noise, whats the effect on the heating of the HDDs? Will they overheat more and block fans from cooling the HDDs? Also, would they harm/help internal heat of the case. (I'm a newb as you can see from my post count, I'm just shooting in the dark about the internal heat thing)

Was also wandering the same for the special padding. Harm/help internal heat of the case.

Thanks

The crazy thing is that I dont have any other fans apart form the CPU fan and the PSU. Both the HDDs are quite new (1 is Dec 2002, other Mar 2003). Dunno what the hel it is.

I sorta have the same problem. I have one PC where it is so noisy I have to turn it off at night because I cant sleep :S. My other PC is very quiet though.

I had a look inside and there is a HUGE heatsink and cpu fan. It runs with lo revs to keep the noise down.

Maybe there are some special hsf available?

Fans and drives aside, I've seen a lot of power supplies and monitors that hum and whistle a lot. My monitor is one of those. It just sits there and sings to me when it goes into sleep mode. I just completely turn off the power to the monitor when not using it.

One thing you could do to figure out what it is, is that you could just take everything out, besided the power supply and mobo, and then slowly start pluggin ur other hardware in, and when noise starts happening, you know what it is, and then you can figure out what kind of hardware you need to make it stfu... anyway, gl Laughing

Nothing quite like an SLK-800 with a nice adjustable 80mm fan is there JAE?

Probably not as nice as an SLK-947U with a 92mm Vantec Stealth that I'm going to use in a system for EdisonRex's mother.

The 92mm Vantec Stealth is very quiet, but it does not move much air at all. I am much more satisfied with a Panaflo fan instead of the Vantec.

I bet it is the generic psu.

you could replace the fan
**********DANGER*************
Don't open a power supply case unless you know what your doing

it isn't really that hard if your decent with a soldering iron and have either some heat shrink tubeing or some electrical tape you can just pull out the old fan and put in a new 80mm of your choice.
**********DANGER*************
to slow of a fan might cause power supply failure
Though personally I'm all for tempature controled fans.

and if any one has An Idea of how to quite down 2 hard drives with out having to move them in to 5.25 drives that would be great (though I shouldn't complain, the hard drives, at 35-38 db, are the loudest thing in my case now. at least on a regular basis the fans get louder when I'm not here and the folding screen saver kicks in.)

try this.
http://www.coolermaster.com/index.php?LT=english&Language_s=2&url_place=product&p_serial=ACB-V83&other_title=%2BACB-V83%2BJET%207

most noise after PSU's comes form the CPU fan. ususally a 60-80mm fan that's turning at 7k rpm. the coolermaster does 3.75k rpm, and it's very quiet. it can also be turned down to around 1500, when you're just surfing/email'g. it runs my K7 2700+ at 118F with F@H running.

as far as H2O cooling goes, moost of your pre-made kits have very little problems with leaks.

No, i've sorted out the PSU ages ago, the noise comes from the 15odd case fans that I have. My CPU HSF is an Aero7 on an XDream Heatsink, so thats pretty quiet.

The only reason I dont go for H2O is the fact that I like to LAN.
