I still have no internet connection. I downloaded Mandrake 7.2, and installed with Win2K on my main Hard Drive. I wanted to use the NT boot loader like in your article about dual booting. For some reason when I made the linux boot disk, it wrote to the disk, but it didn't make a boot disk. So I reinstalled, using a brand new disk, same thing, no boot disk. So I reinstalled a third time, and used LILO as the boot loader(God, I hate LILO[Sad]). I have a Realtek 8139A PCI 10/100 nic, connected to a DSL modem. I set up a DHCP connection during the install, but once I get into linux, I have no connection. It hangs on the connecting to network stage of the boot up for like a minute. I have two questions: First I want to get on the internet under Linux, how?? Second: I would like to get rid of LILO and use the NT Boot loader, is there any way I can do this now, or would I have to reinstall Linux yet again??

I also use mandrake 7.2 im am on cable and use dhcp i had to use a line in the console to get the DHCP settings to work im not sure if its the same with yours but i had to enter my client id coXXXXXX-a into dhcpcd like this
/sbin/dhcpcd -d -h coXXXXXX-a eth0 the Xs are differnt for each user and the eth0 could be differnt to i also had a problem with the bootloader but under windows 2000 it wrote over the mbr so windows wouldnt boot i think the rescue disk can save this but i had to reinstall as i didnt have them now i just boot into linux with a floppy.

Sorry Hummer010 for missing your post or I would have answered this more quickly. If LILO has overwritten your MBR of the boot drive then you'll need to boot of a Win98 boot disk and do a "fdisk /MBR" and then "sys c:" minus the quotes of course. That should get you back to booting to the NT bootloader. As for getting the internet through a cable modem, I'm not real sure. I know for a fact there are numerous articles and how-tos on the subject. Take a look http://mandrakeuser.org/for information.

I played aroun with it for a while, but never got it going. I know a guy who is a bit of a Linux guru, so he came over and looked at it. He says my nic and Linux don't want to play together. He says he could probably make them play, but it is easier just to buy a new nic. I haven't got around to it yet.

I got rid of LILO by booting to the Win2K CD, and using the recovery console. I used fixboot and fixmbr, rebooted, and everything was fine. Cheers.

Yep booting from the CD is also another great way of fixing that particular problem. Didn't know if you had that though. Go luck, I've found 3Com cards play well with LInux if you are still interested.

Yeah, 3Com is what Kill recommended as well. I just don't have the cash for it right now, and when I do, I'll probably spend it on something else. I'd like to get a T-Bird more than I would like to get Linux up and running. I found an old D-Link 10-Base-T card lying around. Maybe I'll give it a try instead of the Realtek card I have. Cheers.

I wished you lived closer I have like a ton of 3Com 3C509 10Mbit cards laying around. You should be able to pick on of them up for less than $15US I would think?

I got myself a Linksys card that works with my DSL connection and is supposedly tested under Linux. The D-Link card I tried wouldn't work with the DSL connection, so I had to buy a new card. I also just set up my RAID array, so I haven't re-installed Linux yet, but soon. Does anyone know if installing Linux is going to be a problem on my Promise Fastrack66 RAID controller?? I haven't found Linux drivers for the controller so I'm a little concerned that Linux won't recognize my HD. If it won't, I'm fuct. No spare HD, and no money to get one.
