Turn off the SSID broadcast. That other laptop should never have known that your access point exists.

Get another access point, one produced by someone with a better grasp of English. "try to connected" indeed. Sheesh.

Based on the MAC address the type is:

Code: Select all
00-E0-00   (hex)      FUJITSU, LTD
00E000     (base 16)      FUJITSU, LTD
            CO-MAIL NO. HON 180
            1-1 KAMIKODANAKA 4-CHOME NAKAHARA-KU
            KAWASAKI 211-88
            JAPAN

Not that this information really helps you with what you're looking for. But at least you know FUJITSU played a role in making the CARD that is attempting to connect to you Very Happy

Hehehe It is a Linksys WAP11.

The problem I have with turning off the SSID broadcast is My Laptop can't/won't connect to the WAP unless the SSID is broadcasting.

...the Fujitsu...
I bet it is a Fujitsu notebook with integrated wireless. I can't find wireless cards by Fujitsu.

I wouldn't worry. Doubt it's someone actively trying to gain access to your network; more likely it's just someone with Windows XP cycling through all the possible connections before connecting to their own network. Or they just plug in and don't even use wireless, but it keeps on searchin'....

Your post made me check my connections.... my DHCP log shows a recent connection from....

192.168.123.125
LFARW2382
00-07-50-D5-E5-40

Which isn't any of my boxen. Looks like someone connected my network sometime recently. There's really nothing on it, and when it comes down to it I have done absolutely NOTHING to protect it - on purpose. I've been waiting and waiting for someone to connect to it, and someone finally did. Just-in-time for me to move and invalidate their GPS mapping. Very Happy Oh well, I guess I should probably secure the darn thing when I get to my new place.

Is there any downside to leaving an access point unprotected...as long as the internal network is protected/secured, and internet access is only allowed when stated?

[edit]to stay on topic as well, Random, do you see any DHCP leases on your access point? On my linksys there is a page for Active MAC Addresses, do you have something similar to this as well?

Yeah, someone borrowing your net connection to do something illegal. Blame falls on you.

no other leases, just my laptop.

It has the only MAC address that I allow access. But I know there is a way around that as well as WEP.
