Which should I use to connect my cable modem, USB or NIC? Is one better than the other?
This question is the result of problems I was having with Roadrunner YET AGAIN a couple of weeks ago. They were absolutely NO HELP in fixing it so I figured it out myself. One thing I did try in the process was switching to USB. Now, I'm wondering which is better because I'll just remove my NIC if USB is better. |

I'd perfer nic, it doesn't really matter when you only have one computer using the internet though. With using usb you have to have drivers and crap installed for your modem to work, when you use a nic, it works by itself. |

If it's just yer comp...then you can just use the USB just fine.
If yer looking to share yer connection then NIC would be yer better choice as you could run it into a router and share it from there. If you use the USB, you would have to use some sort of routing software or Microsoft's internet sharing connection setup (yuck!). If yer using Linux then it wouldn't be too much of a problem... |

I've used USB only a little for these kind of things.
The only problem I had was that the power/conection was last on the USB port when the PC went into sleep mode. That dropped the conmnection to the modem wich auto-disconnected after a while. This do not happen when connected to a NIC.

I had some problems when we first got cable Internet using the USB adapter. It would randomly go down on me (not in that way...that's just weird) and then I'd have to unplug and replug the jack in the back to get it back up.
My motto is if it's on a network, keep it on Ethernet or WiFi. |

The ethernet connection will make it easier to grow the network later. |

My roommate had problems with his USB connection. Then I put in a NIC and it was fine. |

I work tech support for a cable ISP. Go with the NIC, it'll save you alot of headaches later. Things like speed decreases, connections dropping randomly, weird errors, etc... etc... Seems like everytime I ran into stuff like this the customer was using USB, had them get a NIC and all was well afterwards. Around here, USB is known as the devil! |

Go for the NIC. Save an unnecesary use of your USB port. |
