should i look at making the jump from an athlon 2100 that thinks it's a 2200 up to a 2800, or stay where i am for now...hrm...thoughts? would the speed be that much of a difference? |

I know that there's some way to calculate the percentage difference, but I don't remember what, exactly.
EDIT - I remember now!
2100 = 1.73 GHz
2800 = 2.08 GHz
2.08 - 1.73 = 0.35
0.35 / 1.73 = 0.20231213872832369942196531791908 ~ 20% difference!
Though it may be a little less, given yours thinks it's a 2200. |

Besides speed...there is also the cache increase.
Are you sure yer mobo will be able to handle it? |

Ooooh!! Good question! I know my Asus A7V333 limits me swapping my 2000 out for anything greater than 2400 'cause of a 2 GHz max. A jump from 2100 (or 2200) to 2800 is a bit of a jump. The FSB is also a concern, isn't it? 2400 is the highest Athlon XP 266 MHz FSB processor out there, isn't it? After that, your motherboard need 333 FSB, right? |

Nah, just get a 2500+ and overclock it to 3200+. |

the mobo should be ok...it's an asus a7n8x...thoughts smokin? If I was to get the 2500, what would i need to know about oc'ing it? I'd initially tried to oc this 2100, but it made my system really unstable...is that because I didn't unlock it, or do I not have to with the nforce2 boards? I don't really understand anything about oc'ing, and I don't have the money to waste on frying stuff... |

I think I answered all your questions in the other thread, so I guess I'll just reply here to let you know I did. |

Maybe this will help..Based on SETI
ABIT KR7A-Raid
512 Megs 2100 Micron (Crucial)
AMD XP 2100+ Palomino @ 1.73 GHz =Avgerage 3h23m
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
512 Megs 3200 Corsair TwinX
AMD XP 2500+ Barton @1.83 GHz =Average 2h25m
Asus A7N8 Deluxe
512 Megs 3200 Corsair TwinX
AMD XP 2700+Thoroughbred @ 2.16 GHz =Average 2h18m
Running new SETI.
ABIT KR7A-Raid
512 Megs 2100 Micron (Crucial)
AMD XP 2100+ Palomino @ 1.73 GHz =Average 4h30m-5h55m
Abit KX7-333 (R)
512 Megs 2700 Corsair C2
AMD XP 2400+ @ 2.0 GHz =Average 4h27m-5h43m
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
512 Megs 3200 Corsair TwinX
AMD XP 2500+ Barton @1.83 GHz =Average 4h48m
O'Clocked to 3200+ @2.2 GH =Average 3h31m
So at stock speed the 2800 should crunch faster. |

Price vs Performance :
xp2500 - 85$
xp2800 - 136$
51$ price difference, and minimal performance difference...up to you. |
