i live in dc, but work in madison, wi. generally i'm back in dc over the weekends, but because of various reasons i haven't been back for about 3 weeks. i leave my desktop on, as well as my media computer, which chug along running folding, running an aim client i use to send myself reminders, and various other services.

well about a week after i left, my i lost contact with the box that ssh is forwarded to. i figured my dhcp lease ran out and was thinking of scripts i could write to ensure i always had my current ip. upon further inspection, i've found that neither of my boxes have returned an WU's for folding, making me think either the router is out, or both boxes are out.

what is the best way to keep stats on boxes that are hundreds of miles away when you won't have access to them for weeks at a time?

This is when Trillian and ICQ come in handy. With trillian if you hover ofer someones ICQ screen name when they are online you can see thier ip address. So all you really need to do is get 2 ICQ numbers one for remote and one for home. Setup trillian to use those accounts along with any other IM service you have if you choose to do so, and you are done.

As for the not returning work units, are both boxes on a UPS? What about the router? I got tired of dealing with reseting my router and my modem everytime the power flickered.

As for something other than SSH, you could always run it in conjunction with Tight VNC.

I'd say VNC. Does your router support web admin?

yeah, but it's only setup to accept connection inside the LAN.

i haven't been running vnc because my upstream is crap, it takes long enough just to echo characters in ssh.

none are on an ups, but they should be.

Most of my clients have dynamic IPs, (as does my home). I've been using a combination of dyndns.org accounts and TightVNC, and that's been flawless. All routers have web admin capabilities, so strong passwords have to be set (as strong as possible, anyway). Between these bits, I can usually tell exactly what's wrong.

On one particular server we also installed a remote power reboot unit. It connected to the phone line. We would simply dial into the unit on a regular line, reboot and all would be well.
