OK I'll br reinstalling LM8 again this week, only to clean all the crap off the hdd, since I have been trying to install various different things just to see how.

Using the expert install it will auto allocate 3 partitions.
/
/swap
/home

Ok I know all the software goes into the / (root) partition so what is the /home partition for?

Wouldn't it be better to just have a
/swap
/
setup? that way you would have plenty of room for everything.
Also under the expert you can have it add a /usr partition what is that for???

Thanks
and Thanks to Rover for the mention on the home page Big Smile

the /home partition keeps all the files of the users. Say hda5 is / and hda6 is /home. So if you reinstall linux you can reformat hda5 and install the system on that one and after the installation you add the line
/dev/hda6 /home reiserfs defaults 1 2
to your /etc/fstab and presto all users have their old files back

ok then thats makes sense and is what I thought the /home was for.
So how large of a / partition do you to successfully run. Expert install on my 15G hdd takes about 3.4G to use for the / and then 256M for a swap and the rest was setup for /home.

Just curious thats all, will redo it all this weekend more than likely

I have installed a lot of junk(almost everything that expect language packs or possible security issue,ak the servers i don't need) and i use 2GB so 3.4 is what i would consider the right size.
