Post Posted: Thu Oct 02, 2003 7:30 am   Post subject: Keeping lights on when i shutdown my computer ? Reply with quote Back to top

I know this will sound a bit whacky, but i was wondering if there's a way to let my light mods ON when i shut down the computer ? So basically, is there a way to let the juice flowing in the fans + cold cathode light, but cut the power to the motherboard ?

I'm asking this because it gives a nice blue glowing effect in the night and i would like to always keep it on... Smile

Edit : ... hmmm, it's not very clear(i think ?)... i'll post pictures tonight.

O_o ... *blink blink* -- I never thought of that. That's a great idea ! I will have to find a way to hide all the cables though... but that's still a great idea !

I will try that tonight, thx Big Smile

Why bother shutting it off? Can't be crunching if its shut down Wink
Unless it sounds like a vacuum and you can't sleep that is.
If you can find a small psu, might be able to even fit it inside the case with everything else? Then cabling wouldn't be so bad.

I shut it down because i have to cut on electricity bill. I'm paying at least 35% more if i let my computer ON for crunching... Well, maybe pluging another old PSU will suck more electricity, but only for 2 lights ? It will suck less than providing power for the board, HD, CD-Rom, etc, etc, etc... well, i hope so. Big Smile

so just don't crunch at night and let your computer go into low power mode. there really isn't much of a difference between that and being completely off. and if you're not crunching, it should sleep just fine.

If you really want to keep the power consumption and noise down....just mod yer LEDs/CC lights to be on a separate circuit from the fans/PC. Use a 12V power supply and just run it from a switch. Smile

Well, i know shit(oops, it's not Anything Goes in here... oh well) about wiring and i don't know how much voltage is too much for the "light mod" parts. That cathode UV light i quite sensitive, i don't want to burst it and spend another 40$(CAN) on another one.

Seems like a good idea though. Hmmm... any link that could help me with this idea ?

I'd see if you could find a seperate powersupply that one of those SFF PCs use, this would be the easiest way to make this work. Not only that, but those powersupplies are relatively small so you would be able to stick it somewhere in your case without it taking up too much space.

... i can't believe i'm about to ask this stupid question...

So ! ... uuuhhh, i found an old PSU(a working one), wired one fan to it and when i plugged the juice... well... nothing happened. There's no switch on it except that big black I/O switch, but no power ON switch. How do i... uuhh... turn it on ?

a PSU needs to have a few of the pins that connects to the motherboard connected to form a complete circut... somewhere i saw a diagram of which ones it is.

try this

http://www.gideontech.com/guides/psu_powerup/

you dont need a switch, just a plain wire will do fine, although the switch isnt a bad idea at all. you could mod the switch on to the front of your box, and have all the devices connected to that ps turn on with one main switch.

bingo

also... make sure you already have a fan or something attached... or you might blow the PSU up.
