I have 256M of ram installed on each of my LM8 boxen. Looking at Control Center right now and it shows:
Total: 255MB
Used: 193MB
Free: 3MB
Cache: 37MB
Whats up with that?? I have NO apps running but yet it says 193MB of ram is in use???
Whats the minimum for a good linux box? 512M-1G of ram? |

Linux likes to use Ram disks, so that's what you are seeing.

Ah, the deeper understanding of linux memory usage and how to read it.
here is the output for free on my system
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 126912 125156 1756 0 1988 42384
-/+ buffers/cache: 80784 46128
Swap: 248968 84608 164360
80784kB is the memory used by programs, mainly kde, the desktop prefert by micron The 40MB what is left is used by the diskcache and when a program needs more space it is just overwriten.

very dependant on use.
just console:4-8MB
X with a light windowmanager(blackbox/twm) and some (light) apps:16-32MB
installing Mandrake:56MB
KDE or GNOME:64MB(KDE uses same calculation for memory usage as M$)
Personal opinion about memory usage programs on linux.
Totally useless if you don't know how to read them. And reading them ain't the most logical thing in the world

I too had this problem. Within KDE after a fresh reboot the mem usage was up to almost 200 MB (no progs running) with 256 MB RAM installed. I made my way into the services tab and dug through it, kickin' everything which I don't see a usage for. There's much without usage for the average user, lemme tell ya!
Ended up with mem usage of ~60 MB.
The description of the services is pretty slick, so you will know if you need that service or not.

This scares me. Not that you stopped the services(rightly i think) but that so many services were running after you installed it.
