The supervisor at our little educational instution has this nutty idea that he wants a IDE RAID (raid 1) setup on one of our servers, a red hat 7.1 web server. Now, me and the roomy think that its is impossiable, we both tried dealing with Linux and Promise ata/66/100 cards, and found it to be a real Pain in the arse.
Anyway, enough venting, is a setup consisting of a Promise fasttrack100 tx2 (running raid 1) and two gxp 60s possiable. Note, he want to boot from it...
Brains of the operation? I wouldn't exactly call this a "brains" operation..

As far as I know it is not possible to boot from an IDE Raid setup, but you could always have a small single drive setup with the /boot partition and maybe the /swap partition on it and all the rest on the Raid. There is a thread around here that talks about it and has a link to some good information.

Mhh i think it could be possible... ...we made an software-raid, boot from it (ide) and did the misstake that we bought a "normal" promise ATA100 controller (no raid / fasttrack) - we put it in the pc and wonder that it run without configuring it. |

hum....It ain't looking good( well for him, i'm looking right). Anyway, it appears that it will work with the older kernel, but not the newer one, and form what i've read about promise, the new kernel Linux drivers are a low priority. Anyway, I think i'm going to push for a more "hardware" IDE RAID contoller like a 3ware or Adaptec, which i'm dang sure will work, if he still wants one.(for which i don't truely understand why, isn't that violating the prime rule of KISS; Keep it simple stupid.)
Or just do a software RAID setup using the MOBO's IDE.
Anyway, thanks for the input!
