Post Posted: Sun Jun 29, 2003 2:50 am   Post subject: Anyone with a Compaq CP-2W router and dialup? Reply with quote Back to top

The setup is this:

Tower (host/Gateway) with dialup ISP and wired NIC, ICS enabled.

Laptop (client) with wireless NIC

Both running 2k Pro.
Both can see each other.
Host can connect to internet, BUT only by manually starting the dialer first (one problem).
Client can't see that internet connection even after it is started manually 2nd problem).
IP addresses set to auto.
Pope blessed system.........

Problem seems to be in the router setup and possible DHCP settings.

Any input?

Here is the link for the router:

Others have said that I need to disable DHCP and when I did I get this deal:

This menu item:
Access Point Setup;
that switches it from a-
Internet Router+Wireless Access Point or a-
Access Point Only (disable DHCP Server)
I switched to the 2nd entry and it changed the Internet Connection Method screen from PPPoE to Static IP.
I tried entering in the IP of the host (192.168.1.11) as the "Internet IP", "Default Gateway" and the "DNS Server", but it would let me stating it had a "Invalid DNS Server address". I also tried 192.168.1.1 as the DNS Server address, but that didn't work either.

Then I set the DNS address to 0.0.0.0 and it complainted that the "IP address can't be the local host address or multicast address".
The default setting of the IP address is 127.0.0.1 and default gateway is 127.0.0.2

If I change the IP address of the wired NIC to 127.0.0.1 would that work?

All of these options and it can't do a (what I consider) a simple dialup connection!

BTW, $$ is a issue also since that is why he dropped Cable.............

I attempted to view the documentation but recieved a 404 error...but anyhow, this is most likely the setup you need

Server/Host - Enable ICS as you stated is done, this will provide DHCP and possibly DNS. Dialup connection may have to be started manually.

Client - Set to obtain IP/DNS automatically

Router - Disable DHCP and if the server IP addresses dont work for the router settings, set the DNS IP to match your ISP DNS server. This may cause an issue if the ISP changes DNS servers, but that isnt to often.

Let us know how it works out.

Easy for you to say............you lost me.

I did disable DHCP on the router, but I don't know what to enter in the Static IP page.

Sorry I lost you on that one...your saying that your router is giving you an error message about an invalid DNS Ip Address right? if this is the case, do an "IPConfig /ALL" from a command prompt on the primary computer while connected to the internet, this iwll provide you with the DNS Server Addresses you should enter. If im going off on the wrong tangent here, just let me know.

Note. The quicker the better, I leave tommorow morning for two weeks without internet access Smile
