thought I was over CPU-envy, but seems like my 1-yr-old, 3-yr-old systems are obsolete and antiquated, resp.
---
need some recommendations-
a./ for a nontinkerer.. not the best system for someone who likes to take something new, apart and make it better; installing RAM is as far as it goes..
b./ the best system is like the best car- low mainteneance, and trouble- free.. I dont need to be concerned with 43 vs 45 degrees C..
c./ should be economical [1] and upgradable [2]-- in case I ever feel the need for speed, in an ultimate-sort of way ..
-----
[1]- the way I think, my best system ever was a K5-powered Inteva - actually several.. cheap, but pretty decent components, and no fuss..
-----
feel free to email me [ Linux is a possilbility, if they've made it more like plug-'n -play, without 3 days worth of tweaking and coaxing]

as far as the cpu goes i would recommed useing a Duron, T-bird, or an A4 (in the order of cheapest to $, Last i checked)
as for chipsets look to the KT133a
mobo maufacture i can recommed several for different needs but Abit & Asus come to mind
its a start i guess

Lots of peeps have given up on ABIT and ASUS (spotty quality) ... they're moving over to EPOX and IWILL (looking to buy one of these IWILL boards myself) ...

I am on my second MSI socket-a mobo, and have loved them both. They have been absolutely rock solid mobo's. First I had a KT133 board, the K7T Pro-2A, and then I moved up to the KT133A board, the K7T Turbo-R mobo. The best part of the K7T Turbo-R is the price. I got the board at a local store for $10CDN less than than the Asus A7V133, and this one has an integrated Promise Fastrak100 RAID controller!!

Oh yes !!! I forgot about MSI ... that K7T Turbo-R looks very nice indeed !!! (I have considered that board too - tight budget/don't need the raid )

If you ever get a chance...try Dually's They rock. You might want to wait on a decent Athlon dually. |

You folks have given me alot to think over.
.
I may yet work up the nerve to start tinkering, but not today [ my life's gotten a bit unpredictable, if not unmanageable ].
.
I'll be in 'n out.
