|
Anyone have any experience/hints/ hard lessons learned I do have win2k to install, but trying to maintain the win98 "feel" on the two machines. One is the kids computer. Yes, I know that win2k and 98 look almost identical, but tell that to the girlfriend. One of the win98 machines is also used by the kids. the XP machine is a Sony VAIO laptop preinstall

using a router? if so... for ease leave the microsoft client set at DHCP. config the router and SHAZZZZZAM.
if you're just using a hub... you'll need to use static ip's.
if you want to enable file sharing... set all boxes to the same workgroup... give them all a reboot for the hell of it... and SHAZZZZZAM!
or.. XP has a built in "wizard" than makes a floppy that will configure all the other boxes.... you can give that a try.

give me a picture of your girlfriend and her email address... i'll talk to her about W2K. |

NO you can't have a picture!
Will be using a router, (Linksys wireless-g), and asociated wireless NIC's. Thanks for the info. I have a network of four machines at my place, but they're all win2k. Had planned on using DHCP. |

Beyond the basic TCP/IP stuff, what else do you plan to do with this home network? File sharing? If so, keep in mind that the 98 machines will have difficulties accessing shares on the Win2K/XP machines but they won't have problems getting into the 98 machine. |

for the kids machine 'Net surfing. There probably won't be any file sharing. I know about the whole NTFS and FAT32 issues.
thanks for the reminder. |

Currently I'm on vacation in Florida. two weeks ago I returned from an 8 month westpac, two months longer than it was supposed to be. We did shoot in OIF, can't say how many t-hawks, can't say what targets, can't say from where. I'm on the USS Louisville, a nuclear fast attack sub. We spent 80% of our time at sea and underwater. Between Thanksgiving and returm tpo home port (13 may) I had one(1) day off. At lest I knew I'd make it home.
Anyway, Hawaii is usually gorgeous, highs in the low-mid 80's, a stiff breeze 10-20, and very low humidity. AC is not required.

don't know if this applies here, but I've lost many hours of sleep trying to network two Win98 machines (and Win98 and Linux box), only to find out that I HAD to create at least one user account on the Win98 machine AND change my Network logon from "Microsoft Family Logon" to either "Windows Logoon" or "Client for Networking"...
(otherwise the Win98 box wouldn't see any of the other PC's on the network)
now everything works fine... |
