Well now that I am back with the folks I got to look at my very first pc. Made me feel like virgin again.. er Confused

Anyway, I want to make this into a linux firewall box but I have a few issues I need to solve first.

1. I only have ISA slots. I have enough for two; one going to the router one to the cable modem (I think thats how it goes). So do they make ISA Networking cards still? IF they do; and they are only 10 base (I know 10 base's are out there) will it affect my internal networks speed? I feel dumb asking this question as my gut instinct tells me if I still go through my lynxsys router it won't affect my internal network's speed and that teh firewall just blocks stuff from the outside or anything planted on the inside from going out without consent.

2. Where can I find a guide on how to setup my 386 for this? I am so green with Linux I am camoflauged! I love the idea behind it but I lack the technical finesse with software to truly master it - as well I am really impatient and my second box usually gets wiped and loaded with WinSomething KazAa/Edonkey box. I know there is a floppy version of Linux for 386's - which with their instructions I am sure I can install, once that is done I need to figure out how to set it up for a firewall. All things new to me.

I got half the supplies to do it, and honestly I do not trust any software firewall anymore and I just want to do this right.

Besides, I want to brush up on some pc networking stuff so when I go to the fire department next year to apply I can add in "Got a network specialist? I can handle your networks too!" Razz

Check out ipcop Neff. Easy peasy stuff.
Or you could look into the BSD's but then you got a little learning curve.
I got an old isa card if you want it. Pay shipping and its yours.

Definitly check out IPCOP. You'll have a firewall up 5 minutes after you burn the CD. Very good software.

Hrm, will that load up my 386? I have a CD-Rom on it, but it was one of the first ones ever made - like x2 sony I think.

I did order two lan cards, thanks Bam!

I will look at that program more closly.

If it does not work: check out FreeSCO. It runs from a floppy. Yes. One. Floppy.

Well the situation just got hairy....

Something I remembered as I booted this thing up, and popped the cd in.

First, it has to load the drivers for the CDrom, it doesn't see them otherwise (we are talking 1992 PC BIOS here). So I went to make the floppy (I printed the instructions at work). Then I realized something that always stuck me before - I have 3 drivves besdies the CDrom.
A: 5.25 Floppy
B: 3.5 Floppy
C: Harddisk

Problem: Bios only lets me see A or C to boot with, its either A, C or C, A - I tried to tell the bios that the A: drive was the 3.5 no luck, I even tried distaching the 5.25 and it still wouldn't see it. So I am stuck in a little rut now!

I know nothing from this point on what to do, its way too old for me to finger out. I do know that I could program in the D: drive if I knew the cylenders, but I don't. I am not even sure where to find that info.

It does read the disk, but it can't boot from it. So I have to find a way to get around this....

Floppy drive letters are keyed to the drive's position on the cable. The drive at the end of the cable is A:, while the one in the middle of the cable is B:. Will the BIOS let you set the A: drive as a 1.44 once you've done that? If not, you may just have to make a bootable 1.2 MB floppy.

Yes the bios will let me do that. The problem is I may need to find a new floppy cable - which isn't too bad I am sure I got one laying around. There is only one Floppy IDE like conection on the cable - the other two look like they go onto chips - not sure the proper term. But when I get home from work I will look for that.

Well I got everything solved, got the 3.5 to be seen as a A: drive (thanks all it took was a new floppy cable and a few tries to plugging it in and it worked)

Now when it boots all I get is an L 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 x infinity.

Tried new disk and it does the same thing Sad

Suggestions?

I've got an old 486 or Pentium 75 you can have for the cost of shipping. Probably not worth it. You could probably find one in your area for less.
