i've put aside the watercooling CRAP for now, and got myself an SLK 800
im using artic silver ceramique, a low resistance delta fan 80*80*38, 0.41A, 5000rpm, 60cfm, and 45.5dba (its nice and quiet when off the heatsink, but all that airflow creates a lot of noise when on the heatsink)
im getting temps of 38C idle, 42C load, which im quite pleased with, although i know it could be better...
when i looked at it in the store i saw the base was nice and shiny, but after getting home and taking off the protective sticker, i found i could file my nails on the semi-circular machining marks. i wanted to try it out, and im pretty tired right now, so i only did a 5 minute lapping job using 500, 1000 and 2000 grit each for about a minute and a half, so now i cant feel anything with my nail, but there is very little reflection.
also, i'm not sure if the Ceramique is spread evenly.. i wiped it into the heatsink, and put a blob of it on the centre of the die, like the articsilver site instructs.. but i may have moved the heatsink over it, and taken some of it off the die. I may re-lap it and re-apply the ceramique tomorrow.

anyway.. i was just wondering about what fans i could use.. After seeing how well the coolermaster Aero 7 performed, i wonder if there are any 80mm blowers i could use on the slk800.
I was also wondering about TMD fans. has anyone used one on their slk800?

I believe beast has a TMD on his SLK in this topic but it's a 700 not an 800

I use the Vantec AreoFlow and It works great... cpu sitting nice and tight @ 39°c Load with my case fans set to half speed. I can't tell you what it would be idle I never let my computer get away with being idle. I was gettting much better results then but I had some sound issues with the fans I was using so I have found the balance of cool/noise and got rid of the slot blower by the graphics.. Cool is nice quiet is as well...

Artic Silver is my compound of choice, but we should talk of 1 or 2 ° difference according to the reviews I read vs ceramique and thats what we seem to have. 42°C for you and 39°C for me. My Advise... wait. your compund will settle and you will drop annother degree or so.

yeh.. YS tech are meant to be releasing an 80mm version of the TMD fan soon, which i might get..
i can't really hear my comp over the noise of my AC, so i guess there's no need to rush.
also, the reviews i've read about ceramique give temps of 1 or 2C lower than artic silver. another good thing about it is there aren;t any conductive substances in it, meaning we can use it on RAM (cant really think of when this would be too important though...)

I used Artic Silver II with the ThermalTake Volcano 11, goddam that thing rocks. best heatsink i ever bought., Im using Q technology which increases HSfans speed depending on cpu usage. I.e if I;m blasting away at Battlefield and temps tend to rise so will the 'fans keeping it at an awesome 37 degress. Thats very good considering I got a 2400XP ocz to 2700 speeds. Smile

Funny you should mention this, I was looking at the TMD yesterday and wondering where the hell the SLK 700 is. Somehow I managed to misplace it, there are several cb6's and sk 6's but no slk 700 in the bin with hsf's. The only thing I can figure is unconsciously I decided to make sure I was more a dickhead than demon. I wish the TMD fan worked on the 800's, it would definetiy be my choice of fans, I wish they would make a very cheap adapter. Hopefully their will be an 8cm version soon.

The TMD fans do work on the SLK-800.

yeh, the slk800 has fan mounting holes for the TMD, but i was just wondering about performance. Being 70mm, i doubt the TMD can match the 60cfm delta i have on there now, even with more static pressure, and less 'wind shawdow'- (the space in the middle which axial fans dont blow on - which is actually the best bit to cool since its just above the die)
I'll definitely get the 80mm version when it comes out (it would probably need an adapter tho (?))

Seems Rincewind was right about ceramique being just behing AS3, however AS3 is far behind the Shin Etsu G-751 paste - OCPrices Thermal Compund Shoot Out
after seeing this, i went to coolbits, first looked at the price of the stuff, then just looked round the site, and came upon the Noisecontrol Silverado (also reviewed at OCPrices)
..and now im wondering how well the slk800 would perform with two blowers, like those on the silverado.

I thought the TMD fan was 74mm not 70mm.

yeh, you're right. The diameter of the fan is about 70mm, and with the encasing thing (which has the motor in it) its 74mm.
