After a great many incompetent questions I have finally joined the ranks of happy(?) Mandraker's... thanks Rover, your guide was a lifesaver.
After figuring out how to launch KDE, I thought I'd come post over here straight away.
I've noticed how all the smilies move at double speed compared to windows. They look a bit like a charlie chaplain movie - uberquick!!

k00L, I also was able to get Mandrake going after getting help here, and doing alot of reading here. You might want to test how 'secure' you are at this place..of course secure is an illusion...but!!http://scan.sygatetech.com/

Looks a lot like Steve Gibson's "Shield's Up!". Not a lot of point me using it here as my uni connection is behind god-knows how many routers and firewalls (come on seti-god, how many is it?!!).
Still, a useful site for when I'm on the outside and vunerable - thanks :-D

After analyzing your connection through my network discabobulator, 42 is the answer.
I've been using LM8 now steady without switching back to Win2k for 2 days now...for everyday use I'm stuck in LM8. WOOF!

For my first post in these forums, I would like to thank Rover for the two articles which have allowed me to install Mandrake 8.0 and the NVIDIA drivers. You're the man Rover!
Now there's just a few more things to do for me - get my Hollywood+ DVD card working with XINE (I have figured out neither the alpha h+ drivers or installing XINE yet).
Linux also told me that I'm using a Winmodem (something I wasn't aware of) so I need to buy a Linux compatible PCI Hardware modem to get me hooked up to the net.
Once I'm sorted with those 2 things, I too will be using LM8 most of the time. |

Well don't give up just yet on the Winmodem...do a search on Linmodems at google.com and see if you get anything interesting. As for the Hollywood card, good luck, I have absolutely no knowledge of how to set that up. Again I would do a search on google.com that search engine is the best.

There's a sourceforge project for dxr3/Hollywood+ support in Linux, but unfortunately, setting it requires an INCREDIBLE amount of messing about, that would totally negate the benefit, since I could use soft DVD decoding via XINE. Setting that up would be simpler, but I need to use a CSS plugin to get it to play encrypted DVDs.
Hey Rover - have you any knowledge of XINE? If so - any chance of doing a nice mini-article on setting up encrypted DVD playback in Mandrake 8.0 using XINE? That would be cool for Linux doofusses like me :duh:
I'm still pretty mixed up with installing/configuring software in Linux |

Linmodems...
Unfortunately it doesn't look likely that I could use my current modem under Mandrake 8.0. I would have to downgrade my kernel to 2.2.17 just to get that functioning, since the linux compatible drivers are not released as source code, they are kernel specific compiles.
I have a workaround though, I'll just swap my current PCI winmodem with my dad's USB modem. That should work fine under Mandrake 8.0. |

Nope...never ever heard of XINE, hell I don't even own a DVD, I'm still using BETA tapes.
