The stock fan that came with my amd athlon xp 1900+ is starting to go. I was looking to replace it, but I wanted to get some feedback, should I buy a different fan than the one it came with? And if so, does anybody have any suggestions, I didn't want to go too expensive? Probably nobody in here uses the stock amd fan, right? thanks for any help you can give me

If it's the retail setup, AMD will replace it fer free if it's still under warranty (3 years)...

I actually use two of the stock AMD heatsink and fans on my dual durons. I hate it though, I find it loud considering the paltry amount of air it moves. I have 7volted both of mine.

That said, if you are using the stock heatsink, pretty well any 60mm fan will do. I recommend you look for something with a noise rating that you can live with. The Panaflo 60mm H1A comes to mind as a pretty good mix of airflow and noise. 19cfm at 32dba. Or, if noise isn't a concern for you, you could pick up a delta screamer 38cfm fan, and really cool that processor.

Just keep in mind, the lower airflow equals quieter and hotter while higher airflow equals louder and cooler.

This is a good 60x25mm fan that does a good job without making a racket:

Because it is thicker than your original fan, you may need a couple of mounting screws for it.

I have two fans I could sell you Millo. They are not the quiet things in the world but they will bring down your cpu temp.

AMD will replace your fan if it is within the 3 year warranty. Mine died on my AMD 900.

I use an Orb heatsink and I'm pretty happy with that. My CPU generally maintains 109F

I recomend the Tt Volcano 7+, keeps my XP2100+ Tbred B at 35ºC full load and 29 idle. Case temps of 28 idle and 31 full load. Not sure what those temps are in ºF but they seem low to me. Cool

35 C is 95 F

i have the thermaltake volcano 9 and it works well at half it's max rpm. saves my ears and keeps it cool.

temp conversion:
C to F:
temp * 9
then / 5
then + 32

F to C:
temp - 32
then * 5
then / 9

I am hearing different things from different people and companies about temps. I read somewhere that you want to keep your cpu temp at 104 degrees F. AMD told me I can go way higher than that without affecting performance. they said 85-90 degrees Celsius is the max. That seems way to high to me. 3dcool.com told me you want the temp around 104 degrees F just like what I read on the internet. I changed the fan only, but I should have changed the heatsink as well. Well anyway, with the new fan, I am getting 120 degrees F with the fan at a very loud 4800 rpm, if I turn it down to 1300, the temp goes up to around 135 F. 3dcool.com said I should get a SK7 heatsink and use arctic silver compound to get it down lower. Would you guys suggest this, I like to get a few opinions first before I act. The fan is so loud at full speed.

The 60mm Sanyo-Denki fan that I recommended above is not too loud.

Arctic Silver thermal grease is good, but be careful not to apply too much.

The CPU temperature limits that AMD cites are for the core itself. If your motherboard has a thermal probe under the socket, then the temperature there will not be as hot as the core. Cooler is better. In general, I have seen stability problems when the motherboard socket sensor reported 60°C or more (>140°F). Less than 50°C (<120°F) would be better. If your fan is adjustable, you can probably find a happy medium between noise and cooling.

For really quiet cooling, you want a big heatsink with a very large surface area and a large fan spinning slowly. Copper is better than aluminum due to its higher thermal conductivity.

There are many excellent coolers available for socket A CPUs, including: Thermalright SLK-800, Alpha PAL-8045, Swiftech MCX-462, etc.

Dan's CPU cooler review that ate Sheboygan covers a good range of available heatsinks and fans, but it doesn't include some of the newer ones that are relatively inexpensive like the Vantec Aeroflow, ThermalTake Volcano11, CoolerMaster HSC-V83, etc.

thanks engineer for that link about the heatsinks, very informative. Yesterday I ordered an SK7 from thermalright and some arctic silver to go along with my new fan. This should do the trick. I hear taking the old heatsink off of the cpu can be quite a pain, any suggestions?
Oh yeah, my temp sensor is under the cpu, I have an abit kr7a MB. Well anyway, thanks for the help, I am open to any other suggestions.
