Post Posted: Fri Apr 11, 2003 7:09 am   Post subject: Netscape not displaying a web page Reply with quote Back to top

I'm having a bit of trouble with Netscape. I'm using an older version (4.61) so I don't know if it is an issue in newer versions or not, but I can not for the life of me figure out why this page is not working. There are in fact a few pages like this on the site, and I can not figure out why it is just displaying a blank page. It shows up fine in Opera and IE. Anybody hazard a guess as to how to make it work with Netscape? I've taken out the header and footer, as they don't affect the display (except that they do not appear when the page is loaded) and just put in the content. The problem appears to be with the top of the very first table but I can't figure out why. Man I hate this website.

Code: Select all

<TABLE border=0 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0>
        <TR>
                <TD> <div align=left>
        <table border=0 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0>
<tr>
        <td width=400>
<table border=0 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0>
<tr>
<td><font id=H01>·</font><font id=H02>Checks</font></td>
</tr>
</table>
</div>

<br>

<br>

<font id='I01'><li>Please select the general category of checks that you wish to order. </li></font><BR>

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing=0>

<tr>

<tr><td align=left><a href="step1.asp?product=3-per-page%20Manual%20Checks">3-per-page Manual Checks</a></td></tr>

<tr><td align=left><a href="step1.asp?product=Laser/Inkjet%20Checks">Laser/Inkjet Checks</a></td></tr>

</tr>
<tr>

<tr><td align=left><a href="step1.asp?product=One-Write%20Compatible%20Checks">One-Write Compatible Checks</a></td></tr>

<tr><td align=left><a href="step1.asp?product=Continuous%20Check">Continuous Check</a></td></tr>

</tr>
<tr>

</tr>
<tr><td>&nbsp;</td></tr>
<tr>
<td align=center width=400 colspan=9><img src="./images/checks_fuzzy.gif" border=0><br><br></td>
</tr>

</table>
</td>
<td width=300>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>

I plunk the code in a blank HTML doc, and opened it in Netscape 4.7 - looking at a blank screen just as you described.

I used Dreamweaver and it reported broken tags.

I think where Netscape trips is that you nested a table inside a <DIV> tag. And I vaguely recall Netscape being a real bitch when it comes to using nested tables. And it doesn't seem to like tables nested inside another table either.

Well, gonna have to spend an hour just formatting the code into a readable format. I really can't stand this website. I spend as much time formatting the friggin' scripts just to see where the error is as I do actually trying to debug it.

Okay, formatting the page seemed to help, I can get it to display now. I had to remove a bunch of tags, and then add a bunch more. Sloppy sloppy sloppy!

Oh well, thanks for pointing out where I'd gone wrong. It helps.

Good luck to ya. Netscape is a bitch. You reminded me that I didn't check my website's look against Netscape. I fired up 4.7 and sure enough, it's broken.

If it is not broken in 4.7 than you made a mistake somewhere in the code
