Post Posted: Sun Apr 06, 2003 5:29 am   Post subject: Configure 120g on ATA/133 Reply with quote Back to top

I've installed a Promise Ultra ATA/133 Tx2 Controller Card.
It installed easily and sees my Seagate 120gb.
That's it - That's all
Win doesn't see it, in DOS or Windows
Fdisk (the new one for Win98se) still sees 32gb.
Format says it can't format a network drive.
I've got the Seagate DiskWizard, but it won't configure it on the card either. Anyway, I bought the card because I didn't want to use an overlay.

HeLp !! Sad

P.S. I know! Get Win2000 etc. I have to keep 98se to walk my Mother thru stuff 3 states away on the phone.

Win98SE should work with that controller. I certainly had no trouble with a similar controller with Win98SE and WinME. However, with WinXP, you must load the device driver for that card before the OS can see any of the drives connected to it.

Have you tried the obvious?

. Yes, I did all of that.
. It said that it would configure the HDD, but it nothing, except recognize it.
. I do have the led on the card also.
. I've tried the Seagate DiskWizard, DOS & Windows with the updates Fdisk. DOS doesn't see it unless I use a boot disk, then it says it can't format a network HDD and Fdiak still sees it as 32gb.
. I had Win already installed and hate to start clean because of the ATI All-In-Wonder. I have to use another video card to install Win and then install the ATI. I can't see how that would help anyway, because using a Boot disk and starting with Command Prompt in Safe Mode didn't help.
. I've been to Promise and Seagate - no help.
. I did email Promise, but it's Sun and I doubt I'll hear from them today.

. Did you do anything special? I am surely missing something obvious.
. Thanks for the comeback !! Smile

hey, if you want to run win98se, you run win98se. it's your computer and the choice of an OS is your prerogative.

i'm looking at your computer description and i see this:
Seagate Barracuda ATA V ST3120023A 120GB Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive

is that a typo or is the drive just an ATA 100? if so, why are you needing a separate ATA 133 controller? the A7N8X has an ATA 100 IDE controller built in.

also, even if it is a typo and the drive is an ATA 133, have you tried just using the A7N8X's onboard controller? won't the drive just run at ATA 100 speeds? from what i've read, you don't get that much of a performance gain from 100 to 133.

Sorry to take so long getting back, been sick
Read my sad story and make any suggestions you want

SQUITO - I hope so, real frustrated here.

BrotherHobbes
. I do so much work on other PCs (family & Friends), I need 2 extra HDDs. It's a lot easier to keep the 2 I use (1 just for Windows - 1 for games - whatever) separate. I want the 2 big ones (120s) for storage, downloading, backing up my PC & others before I work? Confused on it. (Who's perfect - not me !!!)
. You're right, there isn't much diff, that's why I didn't spend the extra. The way I use them, I don't need it anyway. A7N8X Deluxe has ATA/133 on Raid, but I don't want to mirror the drives. (Am I right about this? I'm not up on Raid at all))

. Today I finally tried the Seagate DiskWizard. Messed up my StartMenu big time. Changed over 200 links to E: (?) drive. Don't ask me why. I did have a 40g on the Promise card at the time that was assigned E: I guess it thought it was being thoughtful. (Spare Me) It gave a -Can't read from source- when I tried to copy from the 40g.
. I tested it on the Promise card and Win wouldn't even start. Got a good boot and then a stall.
. Now I've taken the card out, put an almost basic backup in, read the A7N8X manual again, checked all the jumpers, etc. and then setup the Internet so could check this forum.
. Here I am

. I'll put the card in, run all the updates, try to clean Seagate off and then try again. I'll let you know.
. I built 3 PCs last week and mine is the only one I can't get finished. Ain't it a B#%&*.

The A7N8X Deluxe IDE ports 1&2 support ATA133. You don't need an extra card. I think what you're seeing is the SATA setup which is only for the new SerialATA drives. Page 4 items 6&17 in the manual.

You can also keep windows 98SE and setup a dual boot with NT, 2000 or XP.

I'm considering moving a spare Promise PCI ATA card into my main PC. Although the NForce2 MCP supports ATA133, it has a higher CPU usage than most ATA controllers.

Post Posted: Tue Apr 08, 2003 7:04 am   Post subject: Dual Boot Reply with quote Back to top

RED1944 - I know about dual boot and plan to do that if I ever get this right, thanks anyway and I do need the 4 HDDs as I explained. I don't want to boot with a 120g, but will probably change to 2 40s on the board.
. I know 4 Hdds may sound excessive but I do have the All-In Wonder to use for converting VCR tapes, etc. I also want my music handy and when I back up someone else's PC I need anywhere from 20g to 60g space just for one. Sounds like a lot of trouble, but if your PC crashed and you brought it to me, chances are you wouldn't lose much. Takes time, but people appreciate it.

JustAnEngineer - Can't wait to get this running. A daughter is coming after her's this week-end. Look like I'll have to fix it the hard way.

Thanks for the thoughts

. Getting ready to put the card in again - Back later

have you thought about uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them? I had this happen to me. Also check your IRQ sharing table for your PCI slots... IDE controlers DO NOT like to share IRQs with things even if their listed as "compatible with shared IRQs" Same with Sound Blasters.
